CHAPEL HILL -- A member of UNC's 2005 Men's National Championship basketball team was arrested over the weekend after getting into a scuffle with a bouncer and a police officer at University Mall on Saturday.

Police charged Melvin Scott, 28, with being drunk and disruptive, assault on a law enforcement officer and trespassing Saturday after police were called to the University Mall parking lot about 2:45 a.m. following a party at Spice Street Restaurant. The party at Spice Street, called the Latin & International Party, attracted a huge crowd.

Afterward employees were trying to clear the restaurant and the building, according to Lt. Kevin Gunter of the Chapel Hill Police Department. An off-duty police officer was working at the event, and about 2:45 a.m., he called for help. When police arrived, they saw a wave of people pouring out of the building, Gunter said.

"It was quite crowded, and they were trying to get everybody to leave, and this is when there was an altercation broke out between Melvin Scott and the employee," Gunter said.

Scott was given several warnings to leave the property, but he did not, Gunter said.

"Scott had to be restrained and he continued to curse and shout," Gunter said. When police tried to intervene, Gunter said, Scott pushed an officer in the chest.

A magistrate set his bond at $350.

Scott was a four-year member of the UNC men's basketball team and was known for his three-point shooting prowess.
