GREENSBORO -- Marissa Kastanek of N.C. State was named the 2010 ACC Women's Basketball freshman of the year on Tuesday and was joined on the first team by Allison Vernerey of Duke.
Kastanek is averaging 10.7 points per game while making 35.3 percent (53-of-150) of her 3-pointers, to help the Wolfpack to a 17-12 record and a sixth-place finish in the league standings with a 7-7 conference record. She is the first Wolfpack freshman to garner the award since Katie Smrcka-Duffy in 1997.
Vernerey, a 6-5 center from France, is averaging 7.4 points and 5.2 rebounds for the ninth-ranked and top-seeded Blue Devils, hitting 50.9 percent from the field.
Joining Kastanek and Vernerey on the all-freshman team are Florida State forward Chasity Clayton, Maryland freshman Diandra Tchatchouang and Wake Forest forward Sandra Garcia.
The honorees were chosen by a vote of 42 members of the blue ribbon ppanel, a group that includes selected media as well as all 12 women's basketball coaches.
The 33rd ACC Women's Basketball Tournament begins on Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum, and the championship game is set for Sunday (1 p.m., Fox Sports Net).
