From staff reports

HILLSBOROUGH -- Hoping to help relieve some of the economic hardship that families are experiencing during the lingering recession, New Horizon Church is sponsoring a food giveaway on Saturday.

"There are so many families in need right now," said Leah Rade, New Horizon Church community pastor. "What a blessing to be able to partner with Feed the Children to provide all these families with such essential items."

At 9 a.m., 400 families in need will come to New Horizon Church, located at 100 New Horizon Place west of Pleasant Green Road and north of U.S. 70 West, to receive food. They will be met by an assembly line of workers waiting to fill their car with non-perishable foods, produce, baked goods, personal care items, breakfast, lunch and a stuffed animal or book for the kids.

The international hunger relief organization Feed The Children is partnering with the church for this event.

New Horizon Church also has partnered with social service agencies to pre-identify the families to receive items. The provisions are designed to help supplement a family for up to one week.

Yvette Smith, Orange County Social Services assistant director in the Income Maintenance Division, said Saturday's event is a significant undertaking as a one-time event, and complements year-round efforts by agencies such as Orange Congregations in Mission and the Interfaith Council.

"An event like this is very helpful for the community families," Smith said. "It is good for one group having one day to serve families."

It's also important at this time of year.

"We're getting a lot of families in. We're having a lot of requests for food," Smith said.

New Horizon Church, which is in Orange County but has a Durham address, is a nondenominational church formed in 1986 and led by senior pastor Dave Bowman. The church centers all its programming and outreach around a mission known as E2: Encounter God. Engage in Community.

Feed The Children works to provide surplus food and other supplies to families in need. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, FTC Transportation, delivers donated food from corporate warehouses to six regional distribution centers, from which it is sent to partner agencies that distribute the supplies through an extensive network of feeding centers, homeless shelters, churches and various other organizations across the U.S.

Local businesses that contributed items to this event include Flower Patch, Sam's Club, COSTCO, Trader Joe's, NOSH & Ninth Street Bakery.
