Town must support anti-drinking efforts

I would like to support Judge Ron Bogle's contention that the town should definitely play a role in opposition to student drinking.

There is nothing we can do that is more important for changing the environment of our area. I am a member of the Wesley Foundation and we are planning a new building that will house more than 100 students at Rosemary and Church streets in Chapel Hill. It will be substance-free.

Cancer center sets fund-raising record

Supporters of Cornucopia Cancer Support Center set a new record while helping to ensure anyone affected by any type of cancer receives the encouragement and resources they need to live life to the fullest. I wish to extend my warmest thanks on behalf of the hundreds of participants coming through our doors each day.

The more than 500 people attending the 11th annual A Chocolate Affaire event on Valentine's Day raised more than $70,000. All the profits go directly toward Cornucopia's myriad free services, including peer-to-peer and group support, yoga classes, massage therapy, educational forums, a lending library and more. The total exceeds last year's record-setting results.

Additionally, 29 individuals and organizations contributed event sponsorships. Local community support was outstanding, with about 50 participating restaurants and more than 125 volunteers -- from teens to octogenarians -- who helped garner auction items, desserts and beverages, and staff the event.

As our honorary chair Perry Colwell and special guest Pam Saulsby of WRAL-TV noted, people with cancer, their families and friends need the ongoing support of organizations like Cornucopia to ensure they can maintain a high degree of quality of life.

We are grateful to all our long-time and new supporters who came together to assist many individuals who struggle with cancer's impact every day. Together, all these heroes allow Cornucopia to be a dynamic, accessible place where anyone touched by cancer will find support, resources and encouragement to live life to the fullest.
