DURHAM -- The Durham school board met behind closed doors Monday afternoon to select candidates who will interview for the district superintendent job.
Over more than two hours, the board assessed information on the 24 applicants and chose nine to be interviewed.
Minnie Forte-Brown, the chairwoman of the board, said she expects the interviews to be wrapped up by the end of March.
Ideally, the candidates will come to Durham to talk.
According to Forte-Brown, the district had "an extremely large pool of candidates."
"You usually have no more than 12, so we doubled" that number, she said.
The board is on track to hire its next superintendent in mid-April, shortly before three of its members will stand for election.
Officials hope to have the next schools chief take office by July 1, if not sooner.
The district is looking for a new head because Carl Harris left in January for a federal education post after three and a half years of guiding the Durham system. Chief Operating Officer Hank Hurd is currently serving as interim superintendent.
Nearly all aspects of personnel searches involving individual candidates are confidential under state law.
