DURHAM -- A 21-year-old Durham man remained in the Durham County Jail on Friday under a $280,000 bond in connection with a fatal traffic accident Thursday night on Fayetteville Street near Burlington Avenue.
The accident occurred at 8:27 p.m. when a southbound Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Brendan Duan Bass, 21, of Alhambra Court hit a woman crossing Fayetteville Street, according to Cpl. Martin Walkowe of the Durham Police Department.
The woman, Vickie Elaine Riley, 48, of Nash Street, was in the left southbound lane when the collision occurred. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cutlass then went out of control and struck a Mercury Mountaineer in the right lane, Walkowe said. The Cutlass jumped a curb, struck a sign, went through a chain link fence and hit a parked car. The Mountaineer, which was driven by Jerry Boies of Durham, struck a utility pole. Bass and Boies did not suffer serious injuries, he said.
Bass was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving without a license, no insurance and using fictitious tags.
He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant charging him with robbery with a dangerous weapon. The robbery allegedly occurred March 30, 2009, on Alhambra Court.
