'Ice Counterpoint' to premiere

CHAPEL HILL -- "Ice Counterpoint," a new composition by N.C. Symphony musician and composer Terry Mizesko, premieres this month at the FedEx Global Education Center at UNC. The performance will be held during a reception for the center's new multimedia artistic collaboration, "Ice Counterpoint: Encounters in Antarctica and the Arctic," at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Commissioned for the exhibit and inspired by its Arctic imagery, "Ice Counterpoint" is a five-movement blending of natural sounds and melodies for soprano, flute, viola and harp. On-screen photography and videography by one of the exhibit's featured artists, Brooks de Wetter-Smith, complement the musical performance. De Wetter-Smith also will be playing flute. Florence Peacock, Jonathan Bagg and Jacquelyn Bartlett round out the ensemble.

Mizesko, a graduate of East Carolina University, has played bass trombone with the N.C. Symphony since 1971. The Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Louisville, Fort Worth, Syracuse, Buffalo and Virginia symphonies have performed his pieces.

For more information on the exhibit, visit the Events page at global.unc.edu. Contact the North Carolina Symphony at ncsympony.org.

Festifall panels seek volunteers

CHAPEL HILL -- The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking volunteers to serve on special events planning committees for the annual Festifall Arts Festival in October 2010.

The town's Parks and Recreation Department organizes a special events planning committee that works with a staff liaison to plan, develop and evaluate special town events. Committees usually meet monthly and may meet more frequently as the event time draws near. Planning meetings are scheduled to begin in March.

The Parks and Recreation Department creates and promotes leisure, cultural, and entertaining events that represent the fabric of the community, enrich the quality of life for residents and provide a positive economic impact for the community.

To get involved, print and complete an application at www.townofchapelhill.org/communityevents and e-mail to Wes Tilghman at wtilghman@townofchapelhill.org or fax to (919) 932-2923. You may also call (919) 968-2823 for an application or for more information. There is no deadline for applications.

Next Artists' Salon set

CARRBORO -- The next Artists' Salon, sponsored by the Orange County Arts Commission, will be held on Feb. 26, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the West End Theatre at The ArtsCenter.

Light refreshments will be served. Salons are free, for artists of all kinds -- performing, visual, literary and everything in between.

The topic for February is "Copyright Law," and the guest speaker is Daniel Ellison, arts law attorney.

The purpose of these quarterly salons is to bring together artists of all disciplines in a casual setting to share ideas, concerns and information. The Orange County Arts Commission hopes not only to bring the artistic community together but also to facilitate closer ties between artists and the local community. Serving the needs of artists is one of the goals of the Orange County Arts Commission. Artists often work in isolation and Artists' Salons serve as a place to explore a topic of interest to artists with kindred spirits.

Those planning to attend should RSVP to the Orange County Arts Commission at (919) 245-2335 or e-mail the Arts Commission at arts@co.orange.nc.us.
