Mahogany a guest with Duke ensemble

DURHAM -- Vocalist Kevin Mahogany will be the guest artist when the Duke Jazz Ensemble performs today at 8 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium, Duke University.

With eleven CDs as a leader, and quite a few as a sideman, Mahogany has drawn both critical and audience acclaim for his work.

Quilts by Brigham at the Scrap Exchange

DURHAM -- Quilts of recycled fabrics by Cary quilter Willa Brigham will be on view at the Scrap Exchange's Green Gallery at 548 Foster St. in Durham through March 16.

A member of the African American Quilt Circle, Brigham is also a storyteller and musician, and host of the regional Emmy Award-winning show "Smart Start Kids" on WRAL. She sees her quilts as stories, and she often composes tales and songs as she sews. The title of her exhibit is also the title of a poem that she wrote about her quilt fabrics' multiple lives.

An opening reception will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is open during Scrap Exchange store hours. Admission is free. For information, call 688-6960, or go to www.scrapexchange.org.

Rags To Riches returns with 'Stone Soup'

CARRBORO -- The ArtsCenter will host Rags To Riches Theatre for Young Audiences in their performance of "Stone Soup" Saturday at 11 a.m. Rags to Riches are known for providing their own spin on classic tales.

'Stone Soup' is recommended for children in preschool through third grade.

Women's choruses showcase concert

CHAPEL HILL -- The UNC Women's Glee Club and five high school women's ensembles will combine their voices in the third annual collaboration as they perform a Women's Choral Showcase Concert, Making Music... Making a Difference, today at 7:30 p.m., in Hill Hall Auditorium, UNC Chapel Hill.

Admission is free, but participants and those in attendance are asked to contribute non-perishable food items to be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Participating in the concert will be choirs from Carrboro High School, Cedar Ridge High School, Chapel Hill High School, East Chapel Hill High School, Orange High School and the UNC Women's Glee Club, directed by Sue Klausmeyer.

Filmmaker Peter Esmonde at CDS

DURHAM -- The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University will present the film "Trimpin: The Sound of Invention," today at 7 p.m. at the center, 1317 W. Pettigrew St.

Trimpin combines music-making machines, kinetic sculpture and homegrown computer technology. This film by Peter Esmonde looks at the process Trimpin uses to create his works.

Esmonde will attend this screening. Trained at Yale University and the American Film Institute Conservatory, Esmonde worked in various jobs with the Discovery Channel before becoming a producer and director of documentary films. "Trimpin: The Sound of Invention" is his first documentary feature.

Artists Salon to discuss copyright

CARRBORO -- The next Artists' Salon, sponsored by the Orange County Arts Commission, will be held Feb. 26. from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the West End Theatre at The ArtsCenter.

Salons are free, for artists of all kinds -- performing, visual, literary and other. The topic for February is "Copyright Law." Guest speaker is Daniel Ellison, arts law attorney.

Cinema to present 'New Kind of Listening'

ChathamArts cinema series

ChathamArts Sustainable Cinema Series will present "A New Kind of Listening" at 7 p.m. Thursday at Fearrington Village Barn.

Admission at door is $5, $3 for students. A post-screening panel discussion will include co-producers, local artists and disability advocates.

"A New Kind of Listening" is an hourlong documentary that takes viewers inside the creative work of the Community Inclusive Theater Group, as director Richard Reho inspires cast members, some with disabilities, to be writers, actors and dancers in an original collaborative performance.

Artist Ben Towle at CH Comics

CHAPEL HILL -- Chapel Hill Comics will host Ben Towle, artist, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Towle is the artist who produced "Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean," published by Hyperion/Disney and presented by the Center for Cartoon Studies. It's a graphic novel aimed at young readers, which was written by Sarah Stewart Taylor and drawn by Towle. It will be released this month.

In addition to signing copies of the novel, Towle will also give a presentation about the process he used to create the art. In addition to copies of "Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean," the store will have copies available of Towle's previous works.
