DURHAM -- Mrs. Dorothy Leathers Shepherd Cook, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at Duke Medical Center. She was born November 6, 1924 in Durham County, where she lived all her life. Mrs. Cook was the daughter of the late Junious Garland Leathers and the late Leoma Yates Leathers. She was the 'secretary' at JFK Towers where she lived and loved everyone there. Mrs. Cook was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Julian Shepherd and Charles Cook; sister, Gertrude Wrenn; and her two brothers, Buck and Dempsey Leathers.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her daughter, Toni Shepherd Clarke and husband, Larry, of Durham; sister, Patricia Myers and husband, Vance, of Silverdale, Wash.; half sister, Eunice Barbara Brower of Hillsborough; grandchildren, Wendy C. Battle and husband, Bob, of Mt. Holly, Holly C. Patz and husband, Brian, of Monroe, and Jonathan Clarke of Durham; great granddaughters, Emily and Erin Battle; and many nephews, nieces, and extended families who she loved dearly.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Clements Funeral Chapel followed by the burial at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family Monday, February 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home.
Margaret Veasey Hamlet
DURHAM -- Margaret Veasey Hamlet, of Durham, died February 11, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Hamlet, a Durham native, was born June 12, 1941 to Foye and Marie Riley Veasey, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ben H. Hamlet; daughters, Debbie Herndon and Cindy Dillehay and son-in-law, S. P. Dillehay; grandchildren, Natalie Herndon and Stewart Dillehay; sister, Jane Dowler and husband, Oscar (Bud) Dowler, all of Durham. Also surviving is a goddaughter, Kelley Callahan and husband, Phillip Callahan; and god grandchild, Lacey-Lee Grace Callahan of Lexington. Mrs. Hamlet also leaves behind a very special friend, Linda 'Butter' Watkins Dobson.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hamlet will be held Monday, February 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Pastors Earl Echols and Danny Glover officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.

Willie 'Will' James Hodges
DURHAM -- On February 12, 2010, Willie 'Will' James Hodges, age 71, died unexpectedly and peacefully at his home in Durham, N.C. He was born on August 24, 1938 to Henry Thomas Hodges and Helen Hodges Echols in Green Bay, Va. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Avis Groves Hodges; two daughters, Cheri Hodges of Raleigh, N.C. and Kelly Hodges of Durham, N.C.; one son, Kyle Hodges and his wife Leah of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Katie, Kylie and Kinsley Hodges. He is also survived by his loving extended family and friends.
During his 20 years in the Navy he was stationed in Hawaii; Newfoundland; Texas, California, and Florida. He also was deployed to Alaska and Japan. He proudly served his country in the capacity of Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator, Air Force Controller. In-flight Tech Crew Leader, and Operations Training Supervisor. He flew in several different type aircraft, but his favorite was the Constellation.
After retiring from the Navy he spent many years working as a Sales Manager for Cla-Val Company until he retired in 2006. Since he spent many nights on the road throughout both his careers; during retirement, he was content taking care of things on the home front, and always looking for another win by the Boston Red Sox.

Jack 'The Auctioneer' Johnson
DURHAM -- Jack "The Auctioneer" Johnson died peacefully Monday, February 8, 2010 at the VA Hospital in Durham. He was 91 years old. Jack was born in Guilford County on February 16, 1918 to the late Jack Isaac and Hassie Calicutt Johnson.
A member of Northgate Presbyterian Church, Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his daughter, Joan J. Hutchins and husband, Dick, of Durham; his son, David Wayne Johnson and wife, Mary Ann, of Creedmoor; his sister, Mary Johnson Carter of Athens, Ga.; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Compton Johnson; one sister; and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 15, 2010 from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service with Chaplain Audrey Wilson presiding. Entombment with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Dolph Klein
DURHAM -- Dr. Dolph Klein, 81, died January 30 in Durham. A born-and-bred New Yorker, Dr. Klein earned a B.Sc. from City College of NY, a Ph.D. in microbiology from Rutgers, and did his post-doctoral work at Purdue, before becoming a researcher at the Univ. of Minnesota. In 1974, Dr. Klein moved to North Carolina to serve as Director of Clinical Microbiology at the Duke University Medical Center, turning his laboratory into one with a national reputation for excellence. Dr. Klein retired from Duke as an Associate Professor Emeritus of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology in 2003.
Dolph had a charming personality, and was loved and admired by many as a family man, a professional, and even at the end as a patient. He was an avid bowler and table tennis player who became active in genealogy later in life, ingeniously reconstructing his nearly forgotten family tree, and graciously volunteering to help computerize written records for the benefit of future family researchers. He is survived by his brother, Bernard; his four sons, Michael, Laurence, Robert and Steven; and six grandchildren. Dolph was laid to rest February 1 alongside his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Naomi (nee Keller, d. 2006), in New Montefiore Cemetery in Long Island, New York.

DURHAM -- Mr. Vernon Donald Mose, 83, died early Friday at Croasdaile Pavilion.
Mr. Mose is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude Hofert Mose; a daughter, Patricia Mose Deering and husband, Mike, of Durham; sons, James Edward Mose and wife, Cheryl, of Jacksonville, FL and Thomas Alan Mose and wife, Kitty, of Ormond Beach, FL; and six grandchildren, Hayley Mose, Melissa Mose, Amber Deering, Erika Wagner, Ryan Deering and Rachel Mose.

BAHAMA -- Ms. Linda J. Oswald, 65, a resident of 7601 Blalock Rd. died Thursday evening at Durham Regional Hospital. Ms. Oswald was born in Durham, Daughter of the late James M. and Myrtle Glenn Oswald. Prior to retirement she worked in construction.
Graveside Rites will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the Glenn Family Cemetery with Rev. Joseph Glenn officiating. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Ronald F. Overaker
DURHAM -- Ronald F. Overaker, age 67, died Friday February 12, 2010, at home after a three year battle with cancer. He was born in Orange County on March 4, 1942 to William Thomas (Bill) Overaker and Gertrude Smith Overaker. Mr. Overaker attended Hillsborough schools and graduated in 1961. He went on to study as a machinist at Durham Technical Institute and as a watch maker. Mr. Overaker was employed at Duke University Medical Center for 42 years. He worked as the manager of the Research Instrument shop at Duke University and as the director of the biophysics' laboratory for Duke Ophthalmology. Mr. Overaker is also the owner and President of Research Instruments, Inc. which he founded in 1975. Through his work at Duke University Medical Center, Duke Eye Center and Research Instruments, Inc. Mr. Overaker owns many patents and accomplishments.
In addition to his work, Mr. Overaker served in the National Guard for seven years; was a member of the Board of Directors of Eno Fire and Rescue for 14 years; was the chair person for the building committee, and was instrumental in establishing the new Eno Fire Station number 2 on Saint Mary's Rd. He was a member of Pleasant Green United Methodist Church, and during his better health enjoyed his hobbies of watch repair and old cars with special friends.
Mr. Overaker is survived by his wife of 45 years, Charlotte Estes Overaker of Durham; daughter, Cynthia Overaker Thornton and husband, Rick, of Goldsboro; son, Dean Overaker of Durham; grandchildren, Ashley Thornton, Shayne Overaker, Nick Overaker, Christian Overaker; and step-grandsons, Rossi Thornton and Caleb Thornton. He is also survived by his mother, Gertrude Smith Overaker of Hillsborough; brothers, Tommy Overaker and wife, Carolyn, of Walkertown, Larry Overaker and wife, Helen, of Hillsborough; sisters, Phyllis Ross and husband, George, of Arlington, Va., Judy McGhee of Yorktown, Va., and Peggy Berryhill and husband, Lee, of Hillsborough; sister-in-law, Joyce Duncan, of Durham; and brother-in-law, Larry Estes, of Semora; and many special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a great-great nephew, several of whom were a great help during his extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Overaker; his father-in-law, George Daylon Estes; his mother-in-law, Lorena Jackson Estes; his grandson, Brandon Overaker; his brothers-in-law, Cecil Duncan and Tom Eastman; and his sister-in-law, Loretta Estes.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' Bradsher Patton
DURHAM -- Mrs. Jacqueline 'Jackie' Bradsher Patton, 62, of Bywood Dr. in Durham passed away Friday evening at Duke University Hospital. Mrs. Patton was born in Alamance County the daughter of Inez Revis Bradsher and the late William "Bill" Horace Bradsher.
Jackie worked at Wake Radiology as a mammographer and was formerly employed by Duke Medical Center and Durham Radiology. She was a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Dick Patton, two daughters, Amy Wilkinson and husband, Trent of Chesterfield, Va.; Julie Colvard and husband, Brad of Durham; sister, Barbara Jones of Burlington; and four grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah Colvard, and Carter and Avery Wilkinson.

Wallace Haywood Royal
DURHAM -- Mr. Wallace Haywood Royal, 75, of 2217 NC Hwy 55, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Friday, February 12, 2010.
His service will be conducted at 12 noon on Wednesday, February 17 at St. Mark AME Zion Church, 531 S. Roxboro St. Interment will follow in Markham Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday night, February 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Mark Church.
Mr Royal attended Durham Public Schools where he graduated from Hillside High School in 1952. He attended North Carolina Central University, but later joined the U.S. Army and served until he received an honorable discharge. He later was employed by American Tobacco Company, where he worked diligently, and as a result became the first African American Supervisor in the Durham location. After serving the company for 38 years, Mr. Royal retired in 1987.
At an early age, Mr. Royal joined St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, and was a dedicated member, serving in numerous capacities. His favorite past time was bowling, cooking, playing horseshoes, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Hazel Plummer Bowling League and the Lula Mae Royal Bowling League.
Mr. Royal is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Norma McCoy Royal; one daughter, L. Bliss Copeland; and one grandson, Austin Royal Copeland of Durham; and a sister-in-law, Helen Murray of Durham, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. There will be a public viewing on Tuesday, February 16 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at Burthey Funeral Chapel.

Oleta West Stone
DURHAM -- Oleta West Stone, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord on February 11, 2010.
Born in Sampson County to Hanson and Carra West on November 24, 1916, she was married to Coy Franklin Stone, previously deceased, for 48 years.
Mrs. Stone taught the Phoebe Bible Class at Holloway Street Baptist Church for over 40 years. She led the senior group known as "Live Embers" for 10 years, first at Holloway Street and then at Three Rivers Baptist Church. A loyal member in recent years at Immanuel Baptist Church, she was a member of the Lydia Bible Class, the Viola Cross Circle, and the Senior Joy Group. Wherever she was, Oleta had a great desire to serve the Lord.
In her own words, Mrs. Stone was a happy and fun person who enjoyed life and tried to make those around her enjoy it, too. She had a host of friends who considered her a very special lady.
Survivors include two sons, Dwight and Donald and his wife, Linda. A third son, Ted, and a daughter-in-law, Thelma, are previously deceased. Other family members are daughters-in-law, Ann and Betty; grandchildren: Ellen Sichina, Carole Doll, Lisa Parrish, Terri Stone, Jimmy Stone, and Jeff Stone; along with 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is at Clements Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Berryman officiating. Elisabeth Williamson Williams
DURHAM -- Elisabeth Williamson Williams, a resident at Croasdaile Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility, in Durham, died on February 7, 2010. Her death resulted from a combination of Alzheimer's disease and congestive heart failure. She was 87 years old.
Born, September 20, 1922 in Rotheram, Yorkshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Percy and Grace Williamson. She lived the majority of her childhood and young adult life in London, England. She graduated in 1940 from Putney High School. As a teen she evacuated to northern England during the first year London was bombed by the Nazis during WWII.
After several months Mrs. Williams decided to return to London. She lived with her family in the Southeast section of London known as Putney. She was employed as a secretary with the Canadian Military Headquarters based in London for the remainder of WWII. After WWII she was employed as a secretary in the London offices of the British Medical Association.
During WWII she placed a notice in Harper's Magazine expressing her interest to correspond with Americans. As a result of this correspondence she met James Daniel Williams Jr. after WWII had ended. They were married on November 14, 1951 in Hightstown, N.J. and lived in Corydon, Ind. for the next 37 years until his passing on March 14, 1987.
Mrs. Williams was a member of the social community service sorority, Tri-Kappa from 1952 to 2004. She held several leadership positions during her membership and served as Chapter President in 1962. She served on the board of the Corydon Public Library and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Albany, Ind. She was an employee of Berlin's Department Store from 1952 to 1956.
In 2004, Mrs. Williams relocated to Durham to live with her son and his family. She lived with them for two years before transitioning to an assisted living facility ' Carolina House of Chapel Hill ' in 2006. She transitioned to Croasdaile Pavilion in June, 2009.
Elisabeth Williamson Williams is survived by her only child, a son, John W. Williams; a niece, Dixie Crymes Olson of Columbus, Ga.; and two grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Sheila Mary Williamson.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Albany, Ind. on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 10 a.m.

Wallace Lee Rowland
PITTSBORO -- Mr. Wallace Lee Rowland, 82, died at his home on River Forest Road in Pittsboro on February 11, 2010.
A native of Cambridge, Ohio, Mr. Rowland was born April 21, 1927, the son of Ivor Charles Rowland and Lura Lavaria Yountz Rowland. Mr. Rowland attended both Duquesne University and Duke University. He was a Seaman First Class in the US Navy during World War II. He retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC as a controller.
Mr. Rowland is survived by his wife, Betty Hoey Rowland; son, Jeffrey Ivor Rowland of Pittsboro; daughters, Bonnell R. Pitzer of Fremont, and Christine R. Anthony of Gastonia; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and siblings, Mr. Rowland was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Rae Dean, on March 4, 1999.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday afternoon, February 14, 2010 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Griffin Chapel, in Pittsboro.

Eleanor Daniel Sigmon
OXFORD -- Eleanor Daniel Sigmon, age 90, of 1666 Elam Currin Road, died Friday, February 12, 2010. The daughter of the late Roy T. and Willie Lee Thomas Daniel, she was the widow of John Lewis Sigmon. She was a very active member of Enon Baptist Church where she served as organist and pianist, where she was also a member of the choir for many years.
She enjoyed gardening and yard work up until her later years and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, February 15, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church by the Rev. James C. Shelly, Jr. and Rev. Edward H. Daniel. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving is her daughter, Diana S. Morgan (Jim) of the home; a son, John T. Sigmon (Linda) of Oxford; three brothers, Roy T. Daniel, Jr. (Lillian) of Raleigh, Sanford Daniel of Oxford and Rev. Edward H. Daniel of Concord; two grandsons, Derek Morgan (Laura); David Morgan (Felicia); five great-grandchildren; three grand dogs; four grand cats. She was preceded in death by a brother, Maynard Daniel.

Joan Freeland Hopper
HILLSBOROUGH -- Joan Freeland Hopper died on Friday February 12, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hillsborough on November 9, 1942 to Maxine Hayes Freeland and James John Freeland, she was a member of a family that has resided in Orange County since the 1700's.
Mrs. Hopper attended Hillsborough High School and Elon College. In 1961 Mrs. Hopper married James Ellis Hopper Sr., also of Hillsborough. Together, Mr. and Mrs. Hopper lived in Orange County, where they raised their two sons. She spent her entire professional career in the management of a family-owned real estate business. Mrs. Hopper was a member of the Hillsborough Jaycettes and the Business Professional Women's Club in the 1970's. In the mid 1980's Mr. and Mrs. Hopper moved to the Croasdaile community of Durham.
Her greatest joy in life was creating joyful memories with family and friends. She especially enjoyed traveling to Aruba, Florida, and Carolina beaches. Mrs. Hopper spent many afternoons playing tennis and golf with friends of many decades. Mrs. Hopper was active with the Social Committee at Croasdaile Country Club and took great pleasure in dancing with her favorite partner. She treasured weekends at Hyco Lake, watching her children and grandchildren water ski, fish, tubing, hot tubbing, and swimming at her lake home. She enjoyed grilling and dining under the family gazebo. She loved sleeping on the family float boat as her husband navigated home in the late evenings.
Mrs. Hopper is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Ellis Hopper Sr.; son, James Ellis Hopper Jr. and daughter-in-law, Deborah Underwood Hopper, of Wilmington; son, Jeffrey Freeland Hopper and daughter-in-law, Kelly Niland Hopper, of Hillsborough; grandchildren, Katherine Hayes Hopper of Raleigh, Emily Victoria Hopper of Chapel Hill, Kelsey Elizabeth Hopper of Wilmington, Nicholas Niland Hopper of Hillsborough, and Julianna Niland Hopper of Hillsborough; sister, Donna Lynn Freeland of Hillsborough; brother, Jack Irvin Freeland of Hillsborough; sister-in-law, Betty James Monk Freeland of Hillsborough; brother-in-law, Robert Fagan Hopper; and sister-in-law, Grace Clements Hopper of Saint Simon's Island, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Sunday February 14, 2010 from 3 to 5 p.m. A funeral service to honor Mrs. Hopper will be held at Fairview Baptist Church on Monday February 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Town of Hillsborough Cemetery.

Lynn Boyette Hutchinson
CHAPEL HILL -- Lynn Boyette Hutchinson, 68, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at UNC Cancer Hospital after a courageous eight month battle with leukemia.
A native of Johnston County, she was born on September 16, 1941 to the late Thurmon and Rena Boyette.
Lynn graduated from Smithfield High School in 1959. She attended Salem College before transferring to UNC Chapel Hill graduating in 1963. Lynn taught school for 32 years including 25 years at Pearsontown Elementary in Durham County.
After her retirement, Lynn enjoyed tutoring at Creekside Elementary. She was also involved in many church activities at University United Methodist Church including Bible Study, United Methodist Women and Senior Adult Council (JOY) Group serving as chairperson for several years. Lynn enjoyed her commitment to "make a difference" in the lives of others. Family and friends were such an important part of her life. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. Lynn was a dedicated UNC fan and actually was a UNC cheerleader.
She is survived by her loving husband Richard Sr.; daughter, Kim Herod and son in law, Kyle Herod of Texas; son, Richard Jr. (Chip) and daughter in law, Blythe Hutchinson of Durham; four precious grandchildren, Caroline and Collin Herod and Luke and Min Mei Hutchinson. She is also survived by her devoted sister, Beth Knoche of Va. Beach, Va.; niece, Laura Wieczoreck and husband, Rick, of Northern Virginia; and nephew, Karl Knoche and wife, Carrie, of Va. Beach. Lynn is survived by her brother-in law, Sam Hutchinson and wife, Althea, of Massachusetts; and sister-in-law, Nancy Hutchinson of Massachusetts.
The family is grateful for the exceptional love and care given to Lynn during her illness by Dr. Jerry Woodard (cousin) and his wife, Wanda and her C.N.A. Annette Smith.
A memorial service will be held at Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, in Chapel Hill.

Inez Richardson Drake
LUTHERVILLE, MD. -- Inez Richardson Drake, RN, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at the Maryland Masonic Home ' Bonnie Blink in Lutherville, Md. Born in Elizabeth City, her family moved to Baltimore when she was a little girl where she lived most of her life.
Surviving to mourn her loss and honor her memory are her husband of 70 years, Daniel L. Drake; two sons, Bob Drake and wife, Mary Lou, of Chapel Hill and Jack Drake of Annapolis, Md.; and two daughters, Mary Proctor and husband, Ben, of Lutherville, Md. (formerly of Chapel Hill) and Pam Fischer and husband, Rob, of Silver Bay, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grand-children.
Long time residents of Baltimore, Mr. and Mrs. Drake lived at Croasdaile Village Retirement Home in Durham before returning to Baltimore. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the caring staff at Croasdaile Village and for the ongoing kind visits made by the Epworth United Methodist Church Care Group.
Funeral services will be held in Baltimore, Md. The family is being assisted in Baltimore, by Ruck Towson Funeral Home.
