CHAPEL HILL -- On Jan. 26, three patients who suffered burns during the earthquake in Haiti two weeks earlier arrived at the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center for treatment.

Since then, they've undergone surgeries and skin grafts and their burns are healing, although it may be more than a year before some recover completely, according to Bruce Cairns, director of the burn center.

Since the three patients arrived at the center, it has been overwhelmed by the donations, help and people who have donated clothing and other items and served as translators for the patients who speak Creole.

"It has been incredible for us to experience the outpouring of support we have received from the community, the Triangle, and the state of North Carolina," Cairns said.

Anyone who would like to help the three patients is asked to call 966-4793, but Cairns wanted to remind everyone that there are people who are still in desperate need of help in Haiti, and he encouraged people to continue to give to the charities that are providing relief there.
