'Low-carbon' Lent fast set

CHAPEL HILL -- At the observance of Ash Wednesday United Church of Chapel Hill will distribute low-carbon recipes as people are invited to fast from carbon during Lent.

It is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 20 percent of carbon emissions can be traced to food.

A lower carbon diet is essentially eating lower on the food chain: (1) eating less or no meat (particularly beef), (2) eating local, (3) eating organic, (4) reducing waste and (5) increasingly eating a plant-based diet (no meat or fish).

Church members were invited to share their favorite low-carbon recipe as people are more likely to try a new recipe and adopt new default recipes from someone they know.

To see the recipes, visit www.unitedchurch.org.
