ORANGE BRIEFS
HILLSBOROUGH -- Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation is offering sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who want to hone their basketball skills a chance to be selected for a Touchstone Energy all-expense-paid scholarship to attend either the Kellie Harper Women's Basketball Camp June 20-23 in Raleigh or Roy Williams' Carolina Basketball Camp June 19-23 in Chapel Hill.
One winner will be selected for each camp. To enter the contest, students must submit a 300-word essay on one of the following topics:
- Why do you want to attend the Kellie Harper or Roy Williams Basketball Camp?
- What does the sport of basketball mean to you?
Type the essay on a separate sheet of paper from the application form.
The deadline for applications is March 31. They should be mailed to: Piedmont EMC, Basketball Camp Scholarships, Attn. Rachel Hawkins, P.O. Drawer 1179, Hillsborough, NC 27278. Winners will be announced no later than May 1.
Students may download an application through a link on the Cooperative's Web site at www.pemc.org. Go to Youth Zone/ Boys Girls Basketball Camps.
Applicants will be judged on their academics, extracurricular activities and an essay that must be submitted with the application.
Exhibit coming to museum
HILLSBOROUGH -- A traveling exhibit chronicling the African American experience in the South will be on display in coming weeks.
The exhibit, "We Shall Not Be Moved: African Americans in the South, 18th Century to the Present," is traveling from the Southern Historical Collection from UNC to Hillsborough on Feb. 20. The exhibit will be open until late March at the Orange County Historical Museum, 201 N. Churton St.
"We Shall Not Be Moved" includes photographs and other items from the Southern Historical Collection and the Orange County Historical Museum that reflect Southern African-American experiences. The exhibit and artifacts cover a variety of topics including enslavement, the Civil War and Reconstruction, education, community and the Civil Rights movement.
