UNC swimming, diving

UNC takes on N.C. State at 6 tonight at Koury Natatorium on the UNC Campus in Chapel Hill.

The ArtsCenter

Cedric Burnside, grandson of the legendary bluesman R.L. Burnside, will appear with Guitarist Lightnin’ Malcolm at 8:30 p.m. today at The ArtsCenter, 300-G East Main St., Carrboro.

Burnside is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. Growing up in Mississippi, at his grandfather’s side, he began touring at age 13 and developed a relentless, rhythmically-charged style with strong hip-hop and funk influences. Malcolm, from rural Missouri, is one of the leading, younger generation artists on the scene today.

Art show

The Red Red Wine Art Show by Galia Goodman and Matt Kaiser debuts with an opening reception at 8:30 tonight at Churton Street Gallery, 100 S. Churton St., Hillsborough.

Botanical Garden tour

Join a North Carolina Botanical Garden curator for an informative First Saturday Guided Tour of the display gardens in winter: evergreen shrubs and trees, seed pods, berries, bark, and buds of our native plants.

Community Day

The Ackland Art Museum invites families to spend the day together from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the museum, located at the corner of Franklin and S. Columbia streets.

Community Day is a daylong exploration of art and ideas from around the world. Artists will lead workshops, gallery teachers and docents will lead guided tours, and a full schedule of other programs and events offer something for the whole family. Admission is free.

Yoga at the Garden

Enjoy the benefits of a mindful yoga practice, emphasizing restoration and relaxation from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. Sunday at N.C. Botanical Garden Education Center’s Growning Classroom, 100 Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill.

Yoga at the Garden is open for gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Participants should bring a yoga mat because only a limited number of mats will be available. The per-session fee is $10 ($5 for Botanical Garden members).

Agricultural Summit

The 12th Annual Orange County Agricultural Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday at The Future Piedmont Food & Agricultural Processing Center, 500 Valley Forge Road, Hillsborough.

The cost is $5 per person, which includes a full lunch featuring locally grown meats and produce, and light snacks. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The morning session will run from 8:30 a.m. until noon, followed by lunch. There will be an optional afternoon session from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Parking is limited. Overflow parking will be available. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held Feb 15. Call the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Orange County Center at (919) 245-2050 to reserve your seat.

John Brown

“John Brown in African American Memory” will be presented from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Royall Room.

The Taylor Family

The very musical Taylor family lived in Chapel Hill in the 1950s and 1960s while physician Isaac Taylor was on the faculty of UNC, and eventually became the dean of the UNC Medical School. Isaac and Trudy Taylor’s children have all been musicians (Alex, James, Kate, Livingston and Hugh) as have many of their grandchildren.

This program, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Student Union Theater on the UNC Campus in Chapel Hill, will feature a film by Liz Witham, award-winning documentary filmmaker and daughter of Kate Taylor, about her mother and other Taylors in Chapel Hill and the Taylors’ long-time home, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. Kate Taylor also will perform, and she and Liz will answer questions. The free event begins with a reception at 5 p.m. followed by the program at 5:30 p.m.

Jennifer Larmore

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore is renowned for her baroque and bel canto coloratura roles. Her prodigious vocal gifts, acting talents, natural beauty and emotional connection have propelled her to international stardom.
