S.C. first lady’s memoir sheds light on husband’s infidelity

From wire reports

CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina’s first lady says her wedding was a “leap of faith” because Gov. Mark Sanford, who famously cheated on her with a woman he described as his soul mate, did not want to include a vow of fidelity in their marriage ceremony.

Jenny Sanford also tells ABC’s Barbara Walters in an interview airing Friday on “20/20” that the final blow to the marriage was the publication of racy e-mails between Sanford and his Argentine mistress.

The show released excerpts of Sanford’s interview with Walters, which coincides with publication Friday of her memoir, “Staying True.”

Not having a vow of faithfulness “bothered me to some extent, but ... we were very young, we were in love,” Jenny Sanford tells Walters. “I questioned it, but I got past it.”

In her memoir, a copy of which The Associated Press obtained Tuesday, Sanford writes that her groom was worried “in some nagging way” that he might not be able to remain true.

“With the benefit of the knowledge I have about Mark now, I could point to this moment as a clear sign of things to come,” she writes.

Jenny Sanford has filed for a divorce that is to be finalized later this month. Last summer she moved out of the governor’s mansion in Columbia and now lives with the couple’s four sons at the family’s beachfront home on Sullivans Island.

Sculpture sale price sets auction record

LONDON — A life-size bronze sculpture of a man by Alberto Giacometti has been sold at a London auction for 65 million pounds ($104 million). Sotheby’s says the sale set a world record as the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction.

The auction house said Wednesday it took just eight minutes for bidders to reach the hammer price for “L’Homme Qui Marche I” (Walking Man I), which opened at 12 million pounds.

Sotheby’s says the piece was sold to an anonymous bidder by telephone.

The sculpture is considered on of most important works by Giacometti, a 20th Century Swiss artist, Sotheby’s said.

John Mayer plays free show for USC students

COLUMBIA, S.C. — John Mayer fans had been huddling outside the South Carolina venue where the rocker has been rehearsing for his upcoming tour, hoping to get a glimpse of him.

For some lucky fans, that wait paid off. For two hours Tuesday night, Mayer put on a free show for University of South Carolina students, giving back to the loyal fans who have camped out in downtown Columbia during his practice sessions.

“USC students: come watch us run the show tonight. Free,” Mayer said in a Twitter message sent at 6 p.m. Tuesday, inviting students to pick up their free tickets at the Russell House student union on campus and show up for a concert two hours later.

Organizers originally said only 200 tickets would be issued, but about 500 were gathered for Tuesday’s performance.

Mayer has been in Columbia this week rehearsing for his two-year worldwide tour, which kicks off Thursday in Sunrise, Fla.
