Durham Katherine Boothe Andrews

DURHAM -- Mrs. Katherine Boothe Andrews, age 96, died Monday morning at Durham Regional Hospital.

Born September 10, 1913 in Durham, Mrs. Andrews was the daughter of the late John Alfred and Mary Elizabeth Elliott Boothe. She attended the Durham Public Schools, graduating from Durham High School in 1931, which may have made her the school's oldest surviving graduate. She was employed at Duke University for many years, and was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary in the church office. Mrs. Andrews was also active in the Durham Optimist Club's Women's Auxillary, where she held several offices. She was a kind, generous thoughtful lady with a strong Christian faith. Her husband of 41 years, William Edgar Andrews, died December 8, 1975.

Surviving are her daughter, Katherine Boothe Andrews of Durham, her nieces, Ara Boothe Alford, Mona Boothe Cox, Jeannette Boothe Barbour, Linda Boothe Hunt, Elizabeth Leighton Gunter, Carolyn Vaughan, Jean Boothe Rinaldi (deceased) and a nephew, Jimmy Leighton.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel, Rev. Duke Lackey officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B.

Elizabeth 'Lib' Pollard Boyd





DURHAM -- Elizabeth "Lib" Pollard Boyd passed away at Spring Arbor in Durham, North Carolina, on February 1, 2010.

Her husband, Jack Backstrom Boyd, preceded her in death in 1964.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Pascal Strong Boyd II and wife Jetta of Wilmington, NC, and son James Pollard Boyd and wife Sharon of Durham, NC. Elizabeth is also survived by four grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth Adams of Wilmington, NC, Pascal Strong Boyd III and wife Jamie of Spartanburg, SC, Joshua Puryear Boyd of Durham, NC, and Jason Pollard Boyd of Washington, D.C.; and four great-grandchildren: Bo Adams, James Boyd, Carter Boyd and Heath Boyd. Her beloved sister, Ella Minter, resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Born on May 13, 1911 to James W. Pollard and Lucy Turrentine Pollard, Elizabeth was a resident of Durham most of her life. Her grandfather, William Daniel Turrentine was a member of Durham's first Board of County Commissioners and was superintendent of the Fairintosh Plantation in Bahama, NC, for 35 years. Elizabeth graduated from Durham High School in 1928 where she played "Ladies Basketball" and was honored as May Queen; she then attended Duke University. She joined Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1954, where she was a faithful Circle Club member for many years, as well as a member of the Altar Guild.

To all who had the privilege of knowing her, Elizabeth was the ideal Southern lady -- genteel and gracious. She was an enthusiastic gardener and created many beautiful works of needlepoint. For many years she was a buyer for Thalhimer's, where her elegant taste was appreciated and admired. Above all, Elizabeth was faithful to God and her family, always an inspiration in selflessness and grace.

The family is most grateful for the dedicated care Elizabeth received for 13 years at Spring Arbor, especially from her beloved Ramona Anderson, as well as Cynthia Bridges. The Boyd's will receive family and friends at 4027 Swarthmore Road, Durham, NC, on Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 2 till 4 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Mooresville, NC. DURHAM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Patricia Inez Johnson Charles "Peaches" Crawford, 72, of 3608 Four Seasons Dr., will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Faith Assembly Christian Center, 3120 Fayetteville St..

Family visitation will be one hour prior to the service. She had been a Health Unit Coordinator at Duke Hospital and was a member of Faith Assembly Christian Center.

Survivors include her husband, James Roger Crawford; children, Gloria C. Cash, Cheryl C. Powell (Michael), Frances C. Stroud (Lisander), Willie Charles, Jr. (Wanda), Ronald L. Charles (Clarissa), Wayne E. Charles (Taunya) and Reginald J. Charles (Annetta); 33 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; siblings, Delois Johnson, Roberta Wilson, Gwendolyn J. James Kenneth Foster

DURHAM -- James Kenneth Foster, age 88, died Friday, January 29, 2010 at his Durham home.

He was born September 4, 1921, in Oak Park IL to the late John and Hilda Henning Foster.

Jim proudly served his country during WWII from 1940-1946 in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the South Pacific under General MacArthur's command from New Guinea to the recapture of the Philippines. He completed his term of duty as a Major and continued his service in the Army Reserve in Chicago, IL.

Jim graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Accounting and Finance. His professional career began with Arthur Anderson as a CPA auditor and later as a partner in Martin, Johnson & Bolten Auditors.

In 1964, Jim moved to Durham to join Nello Teer Corp. as Treasurer and later joined Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Durham as Vice President and Treasurer where he retired in 1986.

As an active member of the Exchange Club of Durham, he served as Treasurer for 23 years. He received the Exchangite of the Year Award in 1991 and the Treasurer Emeritus Award in 2008. A loyal and dedicated member, Jim earned both awards for his many significant contributions. He also was a dedicated supporter of the Exchange Clubs' Child Abuse Prevention Center.

A member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars, Jim loved his golf, bowling and photography. He and his wife, Dee, worked as volunteers for 20 years at the voter registration polls in Durham.

Jim is survived by his loving wife and companion of 62 years, Dorothy Marie Jorgensen Foster of Durham, NC; and his brother, Don Foster and wife, Marilyn, of Fort Smith, AR; and nineteen nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, at Trinity Ave. Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Donovan Drake presiding. A reception and visitation will follow in the Carr Narthex immediately after the service.

Edna Mae Hopson Johnson





DURHAM -- Mrs. Edna Mae Hopson Johnson, 82, of Durham, died at Duke Community Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough on January 30, 2010. Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong native of Durham and the daughter of the late Charlie Luther and Minnie Luna Hopson. She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis Jerald "Jerry" Johnson; brothers, C. L. Hopson, Jr. and Joe Hopson; and sisters, Mildred Lowe and Etoile Sexton.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lewis Johnson; daughter, Betty Johnson Birmingham of Mebane; two granddaughters, Sandy Johnson of Florida and Ellen Birmingham of Mebane; and two sisters, Violet O'Dorisio of Denver, CO and Arlene Sorrell and husband, Quinton, of Durham.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, February 4, 2 p.m. at Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Durham. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, February 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Janice Donlin Lawrence

DURHAM -- Ms. Janice Donlin Lawrence, 74, a resident of 100 W. Edgewood Dr., died late Monday night at Rose Manor Healthcare Center.

Janice was born in Northeast Harbor, Maine, daughter of the late Clarence W. and Velma Smith Donlin. She was a member of Braggtown Baptist Church and was a member of the Durham Shrinettes. For more than thirty years, Janice was employed with Newton Instrument Co.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Ross of Durham and Patrick Ross of Jersey City, NJ; a daughter, Cyndy Ellis of Ocala, FL; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests the friends make memorial contributions in honor of Janice to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Mary Sandra Powell Lipscomb

DURHAM -- Mrs. Mary Sandra Powell Lipscomb, 64 moved into her heavenly Manson, Monday February 01, 2010.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church. Home Going Celebration will be held on Saturday February 6, 2010, at 12 noon at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church. The Family will be receiving visitors at all other times at the home 424 Apt. She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Earl Lipscomb of the home; one daughter, Anita P. Williams; three sons, Terry Powell, Reginald Muhammad and Minister Clifton Powell all of Durham, North Carolina; one brother, Henry Powell; four sisters, Doris Brown, Johnetta P. Dixon-Billings, Linda Hill, and Julia McLaurin all of Durham, North Carolina; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Randy C. Little

DURHAM -- Mr. Randy C. Little, 60, passed away on January 28, 2010 at Duke University Medical Center.

Mr. Little is predeceased by his father, Bernice C. Little and his brother Larry Little.

Randy is survived by his mother, Emily Patrick Little, his son, Scott; a daughter, Stephanie Burns, sister, Letha Little, his girlfriend, Candy Taylor, and a multitude of friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wade A. Childress

OXFORD -- Wade A. Childress, 75, a resident of Sanford died Monday, February 1 at Rose Manor Health Care Center in Durham.

A native of Lee County, the son of the late Grover C. and Lillie Wall Childress. He was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church in Sanford and was a former member of the Oxford United Methodist Church in Oxford. He was very active in Sunday School ministries in nursing homes in both Oxford and Sanford. He was a retired agent with Woodman of the World Insurance Company.

Memorial funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday. February 4 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Rev. David Thomas.

Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia C. Emory (Anthony) of Creedmoor, a son, Gregg Childress (Regina) of Kernersville, a sister, Leona Smith of Sanford, five grandchildren, Travis, Brandon, Ashley, Samantha and Gregory. He was preceded in death by his wife Elreda Dixon Childress.

Ruth Ray Crabtree





CHAPEL HILL -- Ruth Ray Crabtree, 90, of Chapel Hill, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 after a brief illness at UNC Memorial Hospital. Ruth was born on June 16, 1919 to Lollie and Brownie Ray. She married Eric Crabtree in 1939 and had 5 children.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Ray Crabtree and wife, Sheila, and Robbie Crabtree; daughters, Sally Mann and husband, Larry, Elgie Hurst and husband, Johnny and Sarah Williamson and husband, Wayne; six grandchildren and one great grandson also survives.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to her devoted caregiver, Nekia Rose Scurlock.

CHAPEL HILL -- Betsy Mae Edwards Farrington of 2003 Neville Rd., Chapel Hill, departed this life on Thursday, January 28, 2010 after a brief illness at UNC Hospitals.

Betsy was born March 8, 1934 to John and Lucy Edwards. She married Woodrow Farrington in April of 1950. To their union was six children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Terrell's Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1 p.m. Visitation 12 to 1 p.m. The Reverend Brian Wright, officiating. Burial in church cemetery.

Surviving are four daughters, Patricia Farrington, of Chapel Hill, Hattie Thomas (Eugene), Milwaukee Wisconsin, Janerio Farrington-Moore (Richard), Atlanta, Ga., and Valerie Pendergraph (James), Chapel Hill; two sons, Woodie Farrington and John Farrington, Chapel Hill; eight grandchildren, Ali, Kenita, Chris, J.R., Nyeka, Shanya, Shenkenta, Kenya; two great grandchildren, Nariya, and Nadiya; two sisters, Florence Hopkins, and Sarah Carter of Chapel Hill; one brother, Louis D. Edwards (Alta Mae) of Chapel Hill; five sisters in law, Ernesstine Durham, Louise Hackney, Mable McCauley, Blondine Reaves, and Mozelle Farrington; one brother in law, James Farrington; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Nicholas Patrickis

CHAPEL HILL -- Nicholas Patrickis lived energetically and purposefully for 80 years. He passed from our world on January 30, 2010, in Chapel Hill, NC. Nick loved his family and respected his work.

Nick grew up in Burlington, NJ with brothers, George and Billy, and sister, Mary. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and then attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In 1956 he met and married Marilyn Jones and they both graduated from the University of Alabama in 1957. They moved to Birmingham, AL to establish business careers. Nick and Marilyn made a wonderfully happy family life in Birmingham with their two children, Terry and Andy.

Nick served on the Board of Deacons and was Treasurer of the Board at 76th Street Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts that met at the church. Nick worked hard in his business career, and established his own business, Nickolas Electronic Registers. He had a wide circle of friends and customers in the Birmingham community for over 40 years.

In 2003 Nick and Marilyn retired and moved to Chapel Hill, N.C. Nick's loving wife Marilyn continues to live in Chapel Hill along with their daughter, Terry and son-in-law, Kevin Endo. Nick's son Andy and his three lovely granddaughters, Margo, Caroline, and Alexa Patrickis make their home in Mandeville, La., (near New Orleans).

Nick's life will be honored and celebrated in a memorial service at United Church of Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.

Clarance 'Peewee' Smith

HILLSBOROUGH -- Clarance 'Peewee' Smith, 63, passed away January 31, 2010, after many months of battling cancer. He was born in Lumberton, N.C., to Freeman and Gussy Smith, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his son, Jonathon Rackley of Clinton, and his dog and loyal companion, Samantha.

Chief is survived by his wife, Dortch Bass Smith; his daughters Sandra Woods of Lumberton, and Nancy Rackley of Clinton; his sons Jeffrey Smith of Fayetteville and Billy Smith of Hillsborough; his sisters Mary Lois Sampson and Annie Grace Lowery of Lumberton; and a brother James A. "Buddy" Smith of Lumberton.

Viewing will be held at Walker's Funeral Home, 204 Churton Street, Hillsborough, on February 4, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. No funeral or memorial services are planned.

Virginia Jeffries Ashley





ROUGEMONT -- Virginia Jeffries Ashley of 206 Bacon Road, passed away February 1, 2010 at her home. A life-long resident of Durham County, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Reed Ashley, her parents, Clarence and Velma McBroom Jeffries, and her brother Lewis Jeffries. She was retired from Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company after 40 years of service.

Mrs. Ashley leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Charles Ashley, Doug Ashley and wife LaJeanne, and Tammy Riddle and husband Mike all residing in Rougemont. Also surviving are her three brothers; Roy Jeffries (Teresa) and Milton Jeffries (Cindy) of Rougemont, along with Donald "Tink" Jeffries (Diana) of Timberlake; four sisters, Linda Cash (Billy Johnson), Debbie Riley (Scott) and Donna Spivey (Dan) all of Rougemont, as well as Shirley Long of Timberlake. Mrs. Ashley is also survived by her six grandchildren; Allison Helms (Joey), Reed Riddle (Nikki), Meaghan Ashley, Sarah Ashley, Courtney Ashley, and Ryan Riddle; and three great-grandchildren; Gaige and Kylee Riddle and Parker Helms.

A special thanks to her dear lifelong friends, Olivia Harris and Patsy Wilkins for their never-ending support.

Also, the family would like to thank her brothers and sisters for being there in her time of need. We love you.

ROXBORO -- Cleo Samuel Bumpass, of Roxboro age 88, a resident of Treyburn HealthCare, 2059 Torredge Road, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the VA Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 6, 2010, 2 p.m. at Jones Chapel Baptist Church, 780 Barnette Tingen Road, Roxboro, North Carolina. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery.

Robert Thomas Horner

HURDLE MILLS -- Robert Thomas Horner, age 58, of 92 Hoot Owl Road, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Durham Regional Hospital. He was born in Person County and was the son of the late Rob Thomas Horner and Annie Smith Horner. He was preceded in death by his brother, McArthur Horner, sister Lou Mae Credle, and half-sister, Betty Smith Jones. He was employed with the Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas Lee Horner, Danny Wayne Horner, Jeffery Ray Horner, all of Roxboro; two brothers, Thomas Horner, of Glasgow, Ky.; Bobby Horner, of Roxboro; two sisters, Rosa Dickerson of Roxboro; Alice Parker, of Cedar Grove; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Stuart Milton. Private interment will be at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Alma B. Miller

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Mrs. Alma B. Miller resident of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away Monday, February 1, 2010.

She was a native of Durham and a graduate of the 1946 class of Durham High School. Surviving are her husband Victor Miller; two daughters, Carolyn Amick of St. Georges, Bermuda and Nancy Miller of Tucson, Ariz.; and two brothers, Harold Bizzell of Durham and Jerry Bizzel of Wallace, N.C.

Mildred Coleman Wilkerson

FINCHLEY, VA. -- Mildred Coleman Wilkerson, 75, of Finchley, Virginia died February 1, 2010. She was born June 2, 1934, in Jeffries Virginia, the daughter of Cicero and Beadie Coleman, and was a graduate of Clarksville High School.

She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 54 years, James Woodrow Wilkerson, her parents, brothers Kirby Coleman, Harold Coleman, Al Coleman, Thurmond Coleman, Aubrey Coleman, and sister Charlene Coleman Bowen.

Mildred is survived by her children Jim Wilkerson, Mike Wilkerson, Andy Wilkerson, and Patricia Wilkerson; daughters-in-law Connie Wilkerson and Rita Wilkerson, and Denise Wilkerson, her seven grandchildren, Ashley W. Baird and husband Brian, Kerry Wilkerson, Jennie Hewitt and husband Trey, Kevin Hartman, Aubrey Wilkerson, Eileen Wilkerson, Anna Claire Wilkerson; great-grand child, Parker Coleman Baird; and her numerous nephews and nieces and extended family members.

She worked for the Mecklenburg County School System as a Teacher's Aid, The County Commissioner of Revenue, and dutifully served the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office for over 25 years as Administrative Assistant to the sheriff, before retiring in 1999.

Mildred was a faithful member of Nelson Baptist Church. Over their 54 years of marriage she served with her husband to support numerous community organizations to include the Mecklenburg County Rescue Squad as a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team.

The family will receive friends at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home from 7 until 9 p.m. on Friday February 5, 2010.

Services will be held at Nelson Baptist Church on Saturday February 6, 2010 at 2 p.m. Internment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.
