- Check your emergency disaster kit and make sure it includes things such as non-perishable food that does not need to be heated, bottled water (one gallon per day per person).
- Make sure you have a good supply of on hand.
- Have thick blankets or sleeping bags on hand along with winter clothing.
- Stock up on personal items, such as toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and toilet paper.
- If you have a baby, make sure you have adequate supplies, such as disposable diapers, canned baby food and juice and formula.
- Have emergency heating equipment and fuel on hand so that you can keep at least one room in your house warm enough to be livable. This might include using a fireplace, wood stove or kerosene heater, but it is important to follow safety procedures and precautions as these can be fire and personal safety hazards if not operated properly.
- Get a good supply of batteries for items you will need.
- Check or replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Make sure you have at least one-battery powered radio and a non-electric can opener.
- Charge items such as cell phones and keep an extra charged battery on hand.
- Keep fire extinguishers on hand and make sure your family knows how to use them.
- Buy solvents to dissolve ice on walkways.
- If you have a generator, make sure it is working and that you have ample fuel.
