Rex K. Booth Sr.

DURHAM -- Mr. Rex K. Booth Sr., 86, died Tuesday morning at his home.

Mr. Booth was born in Galesburg, Ill., the son of the late Hazel Kennedy Booth and the late Ferriel Booth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne serving during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Clegg's Pest Control for 28 years. Mr. Booth was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Sweet Booth; second wife, Hazel Sparrow Booth; a daughter, Dawn Joy Booth Steele; sons, Stephen Booth and James Clifton Vaughan Sr.; brother, Max Booth; and son in law, Edwin M. 'Mickey' Smith Sr.

Mr. Booth is survived by son, Rex K. Booth Jr. and wife, Jackie; son, Michael Booth; daughter, Victoria 'Peggy' Smith; sister, Maxine Hadfield and husband, Ed; daughter in law, Linda Vaughan; son in law, J.J. Steele; grandchildren, Kevin Hart and wife, Stacey, Edwin Michael Smith Jr. and wife, Janet, Vickie S. Smith, Scott Anthony Smith and wife, Heidi, James Clifton Vaughan Jr. and wife, Pam, Charles Thomas Vaughan and John Graham Vaughan Sr. and wife, Angie; great grandchildren, Jared, Josh, Hunter and McKenley Hart, Ben, Justin, Laura, Shelby, Kayla, Brice and Ashley Smith, Luke, Jake and Crystal Hurley, Jay, Jordan, John, Brittany and Lexie Vaughan; and great great grandchildren, Matthew and Nicholas Driggers, Lucas Hurley and Charles and Christopher Jones.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with the Rev. Don Chasteen officiating. Burial will follow at Markham Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Clyde H. Carroll Jr.

DURHAM -- Clyde H. Carroll Jr., 85, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Duke Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Clyde H. Carroll Sr. and Mable Pendergrass Carroll. Mr. Carroll was a loving and humble man who served the Lord as a deacon for many years and taught Sunday school at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. His interests included hunting, fishing and bowling. He will be remembered as a gentle and kind man who enjoyed talking to and meeting new people. Mr. Carroll was also a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Faye Crabtree Carroll; daughter, Wanda Carroll Bennett (C.H.) of Durham; one granddaughter, Andrea Bennett Nieves (Chris) of Durham; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Nieves; one sister, Frances Farlow; and three brothers, Preston Carroll, Dan Carroll and Sam Carroll. He was predeceased by his brother, Bobby Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitch Caudill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main St., Durham.

Eleanor Louise Chenoweth

DURHAM -- Eleanor Louise Chenoweth, age 82, resident of 1114 Donphil Road, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 26, 2010.

Born in Elkins, W.Va., Eleanor was the daughter of the late Blair Silas McQuain and Gladys Brock McQuain. She was a graduate of Davis Elkins College. Eleanor and her family moved to Durham in 1967. She retired from CCB after many years in the Audit Department.

Eleanor loved to square dance and she delighted in caring for family and friends. She was a devoted wife and mother who always put her family first. Eleanor was a member of the First Baptist Church and active in the Joy Sunday school class.

She is survived by one son, Greg Chenoweth and his wife, Carol, who reside in Garner; two daughters, Cindy Chenoweth who resides Durham and Jennifer Hawthorne and her husband, Tom, who reside in Little Rock Ark.; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Bernard Chenoweth; and her daughter, Amy Jo Pearce in 1988.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Andrew Davis will preside. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.

Laura Rankin Cleeves

DURHAM -- Laura Rankin Cleeves, 93, died January 25, 2010 at Croasdaile Village in Durham.

Laura was born November 23, 1916 in Lincolnville, Maine to the late Lawrence Rankin and Helen Wiley Rankin. She was educated at Camden Maine High School and Burdett Business College in Boston, Massachusetts. For several years she worked as a secretary in Boston and during World War II in the Radio Research Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was married to the late George Arthur Cleeves. Laura was a member of the Durham Women's Club and Circle 8 Duke Memorial United Methodist Church and was active in the Alter Guild.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Laxton and her husband, William G. Laxton, of Raleigh; and her son, William Cleeves and his wife, Candace Cleeves, of Surf City; and granddaughter, Katherine Laxton Alvarez and her husband, Santiago Alvarez of Miami, Florida and granddaughter, Margaret Laxton Miranda and her husband, Gregory Miranda, of Raleigh; and grandson, William G. Laxton Jr. of Washington, D.C.; and great-grandsons, Santiago Alvarez Jr. and Evan Miranda; and great-granddaughter, Cristina Alvarez. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cleeves was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Pitcher and Virginia Wilbur; and brothers, George Rankin and Malcolm Rankin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 10:30 a.m. in Few Chapel at Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham. A reception will follow the service.

David Johnson Sr.

DURHAM -- Mr. David Johnson Sr., 89, of 1319 Maplewood Dr., died Monday at Hock Family Pavilion.

His service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 29 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 3307 Dearborn Dr. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12 to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a public viewing today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Burthey Funeral Chapel.

Gladys Cooke Kennedy





DURHAM -- Mrs. Gladys Cooke Kennedy, 90, died Tuesday evening at her home.

Mrs. Kennedy was a lifelong resident of Durham Co., daughter of the late George W. and Jessie Couch Cooke. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Kennedy; a son, Jerome C. Kennedy; two sisters, Pearl Cooke and Ruth Cooke; and two brothers, George Cooke and Otis Cooke. Mrs. Kennedy was retired from the American Tobacco Co. She was a member of Braggtown Baptist Church and served as secretary of the Joy Sunday School Class for many years.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Chris Tesenair and Mr. Norman Stallings. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mrs. Kennedy is survived by a daughter-in-Law, Dina Kennedy; two grandsons, Jeffrey Kennedy and wife, Amy, of Timberlake and Jerome (Jay) Kennedy of Durham; a sister, Nannie Cooke Welch of Durham; and two great grandchildren, Jacie and Colin Kennedy.

Melba Roberts Knott

DURHAM -- The angels' songs were definitely sweeter as Melba Roberts Knott joined the choir in Heaven on January 26, 2010.

Mrs. Knott died peacefully in her sunroom surrounded by her loving family and her birds and flowers. She was born in Durham, the daughter of the late Margaret 'Maggie' Ola Latta Roberts and Edd Roberts. She is preceded in death by her brother, Edward R. Roberts.

Mrs. Knott retired in 1993 from Olive and Olive PA where she was a legal secretary and office manager for 25 years. Her most rewarding job was being a Preacher's wife. She served her Master faithfully by supporting her husband's ministry at Piney Grove and Mt. Vernon Baptist Churches in Sampson County, First Baptist Church in St. Pauls, and Westwood Baptist Church in Durham. Mrs. Knott sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, led the Women's Missionary Society, and was ready and willing to do anything that needed to be done. She also directed and decorated for dozens of weddings. As her health declined, Mrs. Knott continued her ministry by telephone, and many people looked forward to her calls each day. Throughout her life, she was always a mother to anyone who needed one.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, the Rev. Lawrence Harding Knott Sr.; son, Larry H. Knott, M.D. and wife, Becky Knott, of Wilmington; daughters, Margaret Elizabeth 'Betsy' Knott and husband, David Sneed, of Durham, Jane C.K. Fitch, M.D. and husband, Johnny E. Fitch Jr., of Oklahoma City, Judy May of Durham, and Jane H. Herring of Newton Grove; grandchildren, Renee Knott Smith and husband, Bryan, of Richmond, Derek H. Harry Harley Jones





HILLSBOROUGH -- Mr. Harry Harley Jones, 78, died Monday, January 25, 2010, at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Jones was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Harry Henry Jones Jr. and Dorothy Hutchins Jones. He was a graduate of McKinley High School in Washington, D.C. In 1953, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a B.S. in Marketing. While at UNC, he worked as a busboy at the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority house, where he met his future bride, Patricia Ann Noah. The two were married in 1956.

After college, Mr. Jones enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served for two years, including a tour of duty in Suwon, Korea. Following his honorable discharge and a period of time working with his father in the family owned Pioneer Laundry in Washington D.C., Mr. Jones became a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He worked for the Bureau for six years in Detroit, Mich. and Chicago, Ill. receiving four letters of commendation from director J. Edgar Hoover.

Mr. Jones left the FBI for employment with GTE, where, over a 19 year career, he held management positions in Durham, Ozark, Ala., Bluefield, W.Va., and Lexington, Ky. He retired as director of security for GTE of the Southeast in 1987.

Both before and after retirement, Mr. Jones served leadership roles in numerous civic and charitable organizations. He was chairman of the Law Enforcement Judiciary Committee of Durham's War on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse. He was chairman of Durham Crimestoppers for many years, and was a member and past president of the Durham Optimist Club.

Since returning to Durham in 1977, Mr. Jones has been a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones served his church in numerous leadership roles including Mission Chair, Evangelism Chair, Stewardship Chairman, Pastor-Parish Committee and annual conference delegate. He was a member of the Wesley Sunday School class and active in Sylvan Seniors.

His greatest passion was service to the less fortunate. Through Mt. Sylvan, Mr. Jones led 13 mission work teams to Appalachia and rural eastern North Carolina. He was deeply committed to the mission of the Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) to feed the hungry by gleaning unharvestable fruit and vegetables from commercial farms to be distributed to hunger relief organizations. He served as a member of the SoSA National Board of Directors and spent hundreds of hours in the fields and in his truck distributing food to local organizations. Mr. Jones was also the driving force in establishing a Mt. Sylvan church garden, the bounty of which is shared with church members and the community.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Ann Noah Jones; his sons, Harley H. Jones and wife, Cynthia, of Mooresville and Edward T. Jones and wife, Elizabeth, of Huntsville, Ala.; a daughter, Dana Jones Cunningham and husband, Bill, of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Carol Jones Coggin of Greensboro; and seven grandchildren, Hunter and Landon Jones of Mooresville, Ethan and Ellery Jones of Huntsville, and Emily, Katie and Noah Cunningham of Portland, Ore.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 27, at Clements Funeral Home, Broad Street, Durham, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 28, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church with Dr. Thomas Greener, the Rev. Jessie Larkins and the Rev. Julia Webb-Bowden officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the committal service.

ROUGEMONT -- Mr. Warren Cole Stevens, 59, died Monday at Durham Regional Hospital.

Annie Gates Stone

ROXBORO -- Annie Gates Stone, age 93, of 222 Clayton Ave. Roxboro, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital.

Born in Halifax County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Wade Lee and Susan Smith Gates.

She was the widow of the late James Thomas Stone. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Vera Gates, Mary G. Coats, Louise G. Eastwood, and Minnie G. Chandler; one brother, Wade Thomas Gates; and one grandchild, Dale Laree Stone. Mrs. Stone worked at Roxboro Manufacturing, and later at Ervin Industries until she retired. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of LDS.

Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Carver and husband, Sam; four sons, J.

Martin Stone and wife, Dorothy, Wade Ivey Stone and wife, Ruby, George Wesley Stone and wife, Carol, and Kenneth Dale Stone and wife, Rhonda; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 20 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one step-great-great-grandchild; one sister, Irene Gravitte.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home with the Elder Wesley Stone officiating. Burial will follow at the Person Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kelly Carver, J. Martin Stone Jr., Ryan Stone, Al Stone, Scott Carver, and James Stone III.
