Banning dog hunts contrary to culture

Regarding your article on Jan. 23, "Orange commissioners seek ban on 'dogging' hunt of deer," I would like to comment on two items.

First, hunting deer with use of dogs is a safe, controlled method, enjoyable for both the dogs and hunter, where only shotguns are used for further safety. The GPS collars mentioned are used mainly for collecting the dogs after the hunt in an efficient manner and to ensure the dogs do not move into areas where their presence is not welcome.

The choice of stand, still or dog hunting is a personal preference, as each method is sporting.

Second, as a previous member, I am proud to have been associated with the Caldwell Hunting Club for several years. These fine people are concerned and respectful sportsmen and community supporters. They adhere to the wishes of the landowners, share food with the community, support area school fund-raising events, host hunting opportunities for the handicapped and support upkeep of community buildings.

It was obvious that the columnist and commissioners were swayed by those opposing hunting with dogs, without learning the details of this hunting method.

It is amazing that some people who choose to move into, and are welcomed in, rural communities later complain when they discover it is actually rural. Hopefully the representatives in the General Assembly consider the ban enabling legislation request carefully.
