Obituaries, Jan. 23, 2010
DURHAM -- Eleanor Mangum Burgess died Wednesday, January 20.
She was born in Carney's Point, NJ, on July 27, 1918, the daughter of the late Fred and Irene Mangum. She moved with her family to Durham in 1920 where she had since lived. In 1938 she was married to Orville R. Burgess who preceded her in death.
After retiring as a physical therapist she did volunteer work. She worked for years in the cancer clinic at Watts Hospital, and helped organize the cancer clinic at Lincoln Hospital. She did thousands of hours of volunteer work with Durham Regional Hospital Auxiliary, serving as vice-president and president of the auxiliary. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Duke's Chapel United Methodist Church and the Fallaw Copley Bible Class.
She is survived by her son, Donald Burgess; daughter-in-law Nancy of Durham; and many caring nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the employees of Carver Living Center for the loving care they gave Mrs. Burgess.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 25, at 11:00 am at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3-5pm on Sunday, January 24 at the funeral home.
Betty Rogers Howell
DURHAM -- Betty Rogers Howell, 84, died Thursday, January 21, 2010.
She was born November 3, 1925, in Durham to the late Margret and Wesley Rogers.
Mrs. Howell is survived by her sisters, Judy R. Mayo and Mary Lou R. Monckton (Richard); sister-in-law, Bess Rogers; two nieces, three nephews, three great-nephews and 12 great-nieces. She is predeceased by her husband, Norman B. 'Skinny' Howell; her brother, Theron P. Rogers; brother-in-law, Leonard Mayo, and niece, Lynn M. Monroe.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, at Maplewood City Cemetery, 1621 Duke University Road, Durham, with the Rev. Duke C. Lackey officiating.
Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 24, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham.
Virginia 'Jenny' Matthews
DURHAM -- Virginia "Jenny" Matthews, 50, of Durham, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Duke Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Jenny worked as a waitress at Durham Pizza for 11 years. She had several regular customers who knew she loved to serve people and make them feel at home. In her spare time, Jenny enjoyed playing computer games.
Survivors include her husband, John Matthews, of the home; daughter, Amber Browning, of Hillsborough; stepsons, Rod Matthews, of Efland, Clint Matthews, of Durham; two grandsons, Zach and Gavin; sisters, Becky Smith, of Timberlake, Teresa Parrott, of Durham; one brother, James Tuck, of Nevada.
She was predeceased by her mother, Sarah Browning; father, Herman Browning and grandson, John Everett Turner.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Amanda and Liz, nurses at Duke Hospital, for their compassion and genuine concern; and Amy Lynn Kelley, Theresa Johnson and Deborah Russell of Newhope Church for their prayers and presence during their time of need.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to Quality Cremation Services, c/o John Matthews, 448 South Driver St., Durham, to assist the family with expenses incurred.
Martha Johnson White
DURHAM -- Martha Johnson White, widow of "Ike White", was born in 1912, Durham, where she lived 91 of her 97 years. She died in Greenwood, S.C., on January 11, 2010, at National Health Care Center after a brief illness.
Her parents were Oliver Leroy Johnson and Nellie Lee Barbee, also of Durham. Martha was educated in the public schools (Fuller, Carr, DHS) then trained in the Fosset Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat Clinic. She worked as an ENT surgical assistant for Dr. Walter Hardee for 10 fulfilling years and part time in other medical settings while rearing her family. She was co-owner of the Durham School of Dance.
Martha was an active member of First Baptist Church her entire life and helped to develop the Primary Department in the 1940s.
She was a charter member of the Exchangette Club and active for over 50 years, serving as an officer many times and winning "Woman of the Year" for her contributions. She and her husband helped organize the annual Bozart Ball and were active in several dance clubs, excelling in the Latin dances (tango, samba, mambo).
She enjoyed helping others and volunteered in many organizations. For 12 years, she worked with the Red Cross Blood Mobile Unit. She made costumes the Duke's Hoof 'N Horn shows, numerous local theatre productions and dance performances. Even after moving to Greenwood, S.C., she volunteered at the Food Bank until she was 93 years old.
She will be remembered for her pleasant nature, her sensitivity and ability to focus on a person's best qualities. She had an accepting/forgiving philosophy, which enabled her to enjoy friends with various beliefs and personalities from all over the world.
Martha is predeceased by her husband, John Ivey White Jr. (1979), but survived by two children, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Survivors include: son, John Ivey White, III with wife, Ann of Greensboro; daughter, Hannah Barbee White Poe with husband, Bob of Greenwood, S.C. Two granddaughters; Sara Ann White Iverson with husband Shane of Rural Hall, and Karma Elizabeth Poe Myers with husband Gordon of Raleigh; one grandson, Brannon Harold Poe with wife Carol from Charleston, S.C.; and six great-grandchildren: Cooper Iverson, Laurel Elizabeth Myers, Duncan Shaw Myers, Bailey Elizabeth Poe, Hayden Brannon Poe and Spencer Thomas Poe.
A final celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Durham, in the Betsy Creek Chapel, on Saturday, January 23rd at 2 p.m. Following the service, the family will place her cremains in Maplewood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society or to the American Red Cross.

Ruth Pilaut Mammen
CHAPEL HILL -- Ruth Pilaut Mammen, 84, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 in her home at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill. She died from pneumonia complicated by COPD and heart disease.
She was born January 7, 1926, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of John Robert and Narcissa Pilaut, both deceased. She graduated from high school in Paducah, Kentucky, and attended Paducah Junior College. Ruth was a reporter for the Paducah Sun-Democrat newspaper and for newspapers in Paris, Tennessee, and Murray, Kentucky. Later in life she owned and operated the Mole Hole, a gift shop in Bay Village, Ohio. In 1978 she and her husband moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and she became a partner in Metro Greenhouses. She and her husband moved to the Chapel Hill area in 1987.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edwin Mammen; daughters Nancy Burkoff of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Diane Boyne of Anderson, South Carolina; son David Mammen of New York City; granddaughters Amy Kelley, Miranda and Eleanor Mammen, and Megan Boyne; grandsons David Burkoff and Tyler Boyne, and four great-granddaughters.
Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 27th at 2:30 p.m. at Carolina Meadows.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Chapel of the Pines Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

William M. Pegram
KITTRELL -- William M. Pegram, 65, a resident of 15 Wilton Road, died Wednesday at Hock Family Pavilion Center in Durham.
He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ilong Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Moore. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by a wife, Annie Howard Pegram; two daughters, Bernita, of Oxford, and Rosa Lewis, of Henderson; one son, Vernon Pegram, of Oxford; a mother, Estelle Moore Pegram, of Durham.
Viewing will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.

Mildred Harriett Gillmore Memler
LEXINGTON, S.C. -- Mildred Harriett Gillmore Memler, 101, of Lexington, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010.
She was born on August 14, 1908 in Wadsworth, Lake Co., Ill., to Benjamin J. and Addie Devine Gillmore. She moved with her parents to Bristol, Kenosha County, Wis. in 1910. Mrs. Memler married John H. Memler, June 8, 1932 in Bristol, Wis.
She attended County Normal School and Northern Illinois University ' DeKalb. She taught for 20 years in schools in McHenry Co., Ill. She was active in 4-H Clubs in Kenosha County, and in McHenry County, serving as a local leader for 25 years. After retiring in 1971 they traveled extensively and eventually settled in Mercedes, Texas. She studied oil painting for several years, a hobby which she has continued to enjoy. Her paintings are in many private collections throughout the country. While living in Durham she became a member of the Durham-Orange Genealogy Society. She organized and computerized the family genealogy records researched by their deceased daughter, Carol Bennett. She published several family history booklets for her family.
She moved to Agape Senior Community in West Columbia, S.C. in 1997. She was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Marlene Stewart of Durham; six grandchildren, Timothy (Karen) Bennett of Lexington, S.C., Kathleen (Scott) Bodell of Lapeer, Mich., Lee (Meg) Bennett of Plainfield, Ill., Gavin (Julie) Romig-Koch of Cary, Galen Koch and wife Sandra Schlotzhauer, Chapel Hill, and Travis (Julie) Koch of Newark, Del.; 11 great-grandchildren, Amy, Betsy and Craig Bennett, Caroline and Patrick Bodell, Alexandra Bennett, Marlena and Garrett Koch, and Calli, Caitin and Caden Romig-Koch; one sister, Nellie Graham of Coral Springs, Fla.; and brother, Ernest (Marie) Gillmore of Salem, Wis., and sister-in-law Ruth Gillmore of Cashton, Wis., and Wilma Gillmore of Juneau, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Memler, a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Orlie Bennett, and brothers, B. Frederick Gillmore, Glenn Gillmore, and Warren Gillmore.

Robert Ray Shotwell
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Robert Ray Shotwell, 63, husband of the late Marilyn Stovall Shotwell, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010, at his home.
Born in Stovall, on May 29, 1946, he was a son of the late Jasper Holt Shotwell and Barbara Meissner Shotwell. While serving in the United States Army, he received the Presidential Service Award for his honorable service to the President at the White House. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University and retired as a Textile Engineer from BASF. Mr. Shotwell was an avid outdoorsman and had a love for the banjo and bluegrass music. He was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children: Mary Beth Hillhouse and husband, Joe Hillhouse of Anderson, S.C., and Sandra Leigh Shotwell and husband, Mike Bleiweiss of Saunderstown, RI; sister, Jinny Bussler and husband, John Bussler of Mt. Airy, Ga.; brothers: Holt Shotwell and wife, Evelyn Shotwell of Chincoteague, Va., and Jim Shotwell and wife, Sharon Shotwell of South Boston, Va.; and three grandchildren: Alex Hillhouse, Katie Hillhouse, and Cole Shotwell.
Mr. Shotwell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Linda Grace Shotwell.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Boulevard Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Johnny F. McKinney and Mr. Dean Henderson. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010, at Stovall Town Cemetery in Stovall.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at The McDougald Funeral Home.
The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Interim Hospice, the nurses and caregivers, and all of the dear friends for the genuine care and concern shown to Mr. Shotwell.
