Eleanor Mangum Burgess





DURHAM -- Eleanor Mangum Burgess died Wednesday, January 20.

She was born in Carney's Point, NJ on July 27, 1918, the daughter of the late Fred and Irene Mangum. She moved with her family to Durham in 1920 where she had since lived. In 1938 she was married to Orville R. Burgess who preceded her in death.

After retiring as a physical therapist she did volunteer work. She worked for years in the cancer clinic at Watts Hospital, and helped organize the cancer clinic at Lincoln Hospital. She did thousands of hours of volunteer work with Durham Regional Hospital Auxiliary, serving as vice-president and president of the auxiliary. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Duke's Chapel United Methodist Church and the Fallaw Copley Bible Class.

She is survived by her son, Donald Burgess; daughter-in-law Nancy of Durham; and many caring nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the employees of Carver Living Center for the loving care they gave Mrs. Burgess.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 25, at 11:00 am at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3-5 pm on Sunday, January 24 at the funeral home.

Lillian Herndon Duke

DURHAM -- Lillian Herndon Duke, 92, died Thursday, January 21, 2010.

A native of Durham, she was the widow of Bernard M. Duke.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris D. Stanley and husband, E.B., of Va. Beach; and a son, Jim Duke and wife, Jane, of Durham.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23, in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, Apex. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Marvin E. Duncan





DURHAM -- Dr. Marvin E. Duncan, Professor Emeritus in the School of Education at North Carolina Central University, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, January 20, 2010.

Dr. Duncan was born on November 23, 1939 in Greenville to the late Leroy and Mary Williams Duncan. He matriculated through the Pitt County School System and graduated from C.M. Eppes High School in 1958. While at Eppes High, he was captain of the basketball team and President of the French Club.

Following graduation, Dr. Duncan moved to Durham to attend North Carolina College at Durham, now North Carolina Central University. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from NCC in 1962, and a master's degree in Instructional Media and Mathematics in 1963 with a minor in Math. Two days after graduation, Dr. Duncan joined the faculty at North Carolina Central as an instructor in the School of Education. He earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Development and Educational Psychology from Michigan State University in 1972. As he frequently reminded friends and family, he was the sole member of his graduating class to complete the coursework with a 4.0 GPA.

Upon completing his doctorate degree, Dr. Duncan returned to the faculty at NCCU where he remained until his retirement. He was the author of two dozen articles in refereed professional journals. One of Dr. Duncan's proudest moments came in 1986 when 26 students graduated from the Educational Technology Program, the master's program he directed. Dr. Duncan retired from NCCU in 2001 after 39 years of service.

Survivors are his wife, Sandra Fields Duncan; daughters, Carolyn, Crystal Lynn, and Catayah Angelia; siblings Althea Wooten (Johnny), (Greenville), Leon (Myrtle), Germany, Geraldine (Mitchellville, Md.), and Evelyn Boyd (Greenville); mother-in-law, Gloria Fields (Conway); brother-in-law, Clayton Fields (Conway), sisters-in-law, Brenda Carter (Gary), Charlotte and Susan Jordan (Conway); also, many sorrowing relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at North Carolina Central University, B.N. Duke Auditorium. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. followed by the funeral at 2 p.m.

DURHAM -- Ayden Noah Fuqua, 1, passed away Wednesday morning at Duke University Hospital. Ayden was born in Durham.

Ayden is survived by his parents, Jonathan and Amy Fuqua; grandparents, Melodie Parrish, Jeff Files, Marylin Fuqua and Larry Fuqua; great grandparents, Doris and Dale Files, Dollie Garrison and Ila Fuqua; and many loving family members.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Oak View Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Pastor Robert Hillman officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. DURHAM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Robinson Gerald-French, 62, of 21 Rhyn Court, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Bell-Yeager Free Will Baptist Church, 128 E. Cornwallis Road. Burial, Markham Memorial Gardens.

She was a 1977 graduate of Hillside High School. She attended Durham Technical Community College. She had worked at UNC Hospitals for 15 years, Durham Regional Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, N.J. and Maxium Healthcare.

She was a member of Bell-Yeager Free Will Baptist Church and was an usher and sang in the Gospel Choir.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Frederick G. Rev. Arabella Meadows-Rogers

DURHAM -- The Rev. Arabella Meadows-Rogers, a pioneering clergywoman in the Presbyterian Church, USA, died at age 60 on December 17, in New York City, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She served as associate pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Durham from 1985-1992. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Durham, with the Rev. Joseph Harvard presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent in Arabella's name to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, 100 Witherspoon Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202-1396 to assist the relief effort in Haiti.

James H. Pickering





DURHAM -- James H. Pickering, 90, passed away in Durham, January 20th, 2010.

He was born in Cope, S.C., the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Thomas Pickering. Mr. Pickering graduated from Mars Hill College, the University of South Carolina, and Emory University. Mr. Pickering was a WWII veteran, serving in the European theater. A librarian, Mr. Pickering was a Director of Libraries in South Carolina, Virginia and Ohio. He and his late wife, Ann Ferguson Pickering retired to Asheville, where she passed away in 1990. In 1999, Mr. Pickering married Dr. Lorraine Clark of Durham.

Mr. Pickering is survived by his wife; his four children, David Pickering of Ohio, John Pickering and his fiancee, Benn E. Fass Jr., of Asheville, Ms. Susan Wachter of Asheville, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph (Jeanne) Adams, of Potomac, Md. In addition, Mr. Pickering is survived by his sister, Mrs. Louise P. McDowell of Florence, Ala., and her children, Mrs. Max R. (Louisa) Sanders and their children, Maria Sanders and Russ Sanders, and Mr. and Mrs. James R. (Shirley) McDowell of Ala. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Mr. and Mrs. B. Jefferson (Charlotte) Clark of Durham, Victoria Clark of New York, N.Y., and Roderic Clark of San Francisco, Calif. Eight grandchildren also survive him, Michael Pickering, Lauren Pickering, Cooper Adams, Quinnton Adams, Tory Clark, Banks Clark, Thomas Luke Guest, and John Roderic Clark.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Rd, in Durham. A reception will follow the service.

CREEDMOOR -- Mae Neville Cash, 84, a resident of 308 Cash Road, died Wednesday, January 20th at Granville Medical Center.

A native of Granville County, the daughter of the late Glaudie and Velma Cash Neville, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Creedmoor, a Sunday School teacher for 50 years and retired from Kaiser-Roth.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 24th in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Dr. Tom Jenkins. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are two daughters, Faye Adcock (Ray) of Oxford, Brenda Hackney (Jerry) of Durham; grandchildren, Barry Moore (Jamie), Jeff Gates (Jenn), Ed Gates (Dray), Lori Hackney; great grandchildren, Matthew Moore, Jessica Moore and Grayson Gates; and a sister, Bobby Dement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Cash; a son, Johnnie Wayne Cash; and brothers, Ralph, Ed, Lank, G.L. and Maurice Neville.

Elaine Leary Long

HILLSBOROUGH -- Mrs. Elaine Leary Long, 89, of 3707 New Sharon Church Road, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Mrs. Long was born in Wake County but resided in Durham County most of her life. She is the daughter of the late Garland Carter and Lallie Smith Leary. She retired after 27 years from the V.A. Medical Center as an RN. She was a devoted Christian woman who was faithful to her church and family. She was member of Fellowship Baptist Church which she attended regularly until her failing health. She was preceded in death by a son, G. Herman Long III; and two sisters, Lurlene Miles and Flora Leary.

She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Kelly and husband, Larry, of Hillsborough; daughter-in-law, Linda Rose Long; one sister, Eunice King of Durham; four grandchildren, John H. Bost III, April Leary Nipper, Kellye Long Zajac and Donald Chad Parker; four great-grandchildren, Eric Nipper, Spencer Bost, Ethan Bost, Elizabeth Grig; and one great-great-grandchild, Jason Lee Grig.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Dr. Rick Finley and the Rev. Ron Christ. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Horace Williams Wolfe

HURDLE MILLS -- Horace Williams Wolfe, 86, of 3008 Union Grove Church Rd., Hurdle Mills, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at his residence.

Born in Person County, Mr. Wolfe was the son of the late Euell and Luna Chambers Wolfe and husband of the late Rachel Dunn Wolfe and Mary Odell Cox Wolfe. Mr. Wolfe retired from the NCDOT and was a part of Grace United Methodist Church and Clement Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during WWII.

Mr. Wolfe is survived by his son, Kenneth W. Wolfe and wife, Janine, of Hurdle Mills; five sisters, Lorena Blalock and Shirley Harrison, both of Hurdle Mills, Dottie Clapp and Edith Wilson, both of Burlington and Jean Ware, of Semora; two grandsons, Scott Wolfe and Siiri Berg and Adam and Dana Wolfe; one great-grandchild Katie Waldo; and his companion, Clyde James, of Roxboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Clement Baptist Church by the Dr. Ben Gualt and the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks White Funeral Home, Inc., Roxboro.

Stephen Patrick 'Pat' O'Brien





RALEIGH -- Stephen Patrick 'Pat' O'Brien, 68, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 23 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, Fuquay-Varina.

Interment will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Pat was born and raised in Durham and he graduated from Southern High School in 1960. Pat was committed to a lifetime of learning and earned a BA and MS in Criminal Justice from NCCU later in life. Pat also honorably served 10 years in the National Guard, HHD 130th Signal Battalion.

He was a dedicated and loving husband and father who loved being surrounded by family and friends.

Pat spent 25 years serving the citizens of NC as a law enforcement officer. He proudly worked for the Durham Public Safety Dept. and the Durham County Sheriff's Dept. Pat also served as the Chief of Durham Co. ABC Law Enforcement, Chief of the Wendell Police Dept. and as the Director of Communications at the Polk County Sheriff's Dept.

After retiring from law enforcement Pat was the BLET School Director at Isothermal Community College and James Sprunt Community College. He also taught Criminal Justice at Central Carolina Community College and the CAPE Program at Shaw University.

Pat was an avid traveler and considered himself blessed to have toured the country extensively. He was a member of the Winnebago Itasca Travelers and enjoyed many weekends with his second family in the local WIT Club, the Winnie Tar Heel Travelers. When Pat wasn't "on the road" he enjoyed weekly outings with his good friends to see all the latest films.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Marie Gardner; and step-father, Bill Gardner.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy O'Brien; daughter, Stephanie O'Brien of Ashville; sister, Kaye Tilley and husband, George, of Hillsborough; mother-in-law, Nancy E. Smith of Fuquay-Varina.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina, and other times at the family residence in Raleigh.

Earl Michael Pappy

RALEIGH -- Earl Michael Pappy, 51 entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 17, 2010 in Midlothian, Virginia.

Born in the Bronx, New York on December 1, 1958 and raised in Raleigh, he was the eldest son of Bettie Lou Tyson and Jay Pappy (deceased), and the second eldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Kevin W. Pappy and Reginald L. Tyson.

He served as a principal in Richmond Public Schools from July, 2000 through June, 2006 at Thomas C. Boushall Middle School and George Wythe High School. He also served as principal of Hillside High School in Durham, from July, 2006 through June, 2009.

Earl is survived by three children, Cassandra Allayne Louise Pappy and Kelsea Sabrina Pappy of Charlotte, and Khyle Michael Lennon Pappy of Atlanta, Georgia; his loving and devoted mother, Bettie L. Tyson; sisters, Patrice R. Baker (Clifton) and Consuelo A. Pappy, Raleigh, Karen E. Graham, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Darlene P. Ancrum, Stone Mountain, Ga.; grandmother, Mrs. Pattie Rogers, Raleigh; two aunts, Carolyn Rogers, Raleigh and Doris Rogers, Silver Spring, Md.; three nephews, Weldon Pappy, Brian Pappy and Jah Howard, Raleigh; five nieces, Jontue' Hinnant, Durham, Kashika Williams, Rasheeda Pappy, Alissa Pappy, Raleigh and Trinity Outlaw, Stone Mountain, Ga.; devoted fiance, Janice E. Janie Wariner Golden Barbee

GREENSBORO -- Janie Wariner Golden Barbee, 92, of 308 Country Club Drive, Greensboro, died at home Wednesday evening, January 13.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Monday, January 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, with Dr. Sidney Batts officiating. The family will receive friends in the Virginia Gilmer Room at First Presbyterian Church following the service. A private burial service will be conducted for the family at Green Hill Cemetery preceding the memorial service.

Mrs. Barbee was born in Ruffin. She attended Peace Preparatory School and Peace Junior College in Raleigh, graduating in 1935 and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and Education in 1937 from Greensboro College.

She married the late Ralph Jackson Golden in 1938. She and Mr. Golden had two daughters, Jane Golden Brabham of Greensboro and Reba Golden Huckabee of Durham. After Mr. Golden's death in 1981, she married the late James Dorris Barbee in 1983. Surviving are daughters and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Vance Wells Brabham III, Jane and Van, and Mr. and Mrs. James Gaston Huckabee III, Reba and Jim; four grandchildren, Dr. Vance Wells Brabham IV and wife, Katie, of Greensboro, Ralph Golden Brabham of Washington, D.C., Laura Huckabee Roberts of Durham, and James Gaston Huckabee IV and wife, Emmy, of Durham; six great grandchildren, John Mason Roberts, Kathryn Wariner Roberts, Boyce Alexander Huckabee, James Gaston Huckabee V, Samuel Bowling Huckabee, and Hayes Wariner Brabham. Mrs. Barbee is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Frank Edmondson Jr., of Asheboro.

Past affiliations of Mrs. Barbee include: the Greensboro Country Club; Green Thumb Garden Club; Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs; the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc.; Wednesday Study Club; Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Earl of Shaftesbury Chapter; Daughters of the American Colonies, Virginia Dare Chapter; Daughters of the American Revolution, Guilford Battle Chapter; Greensboro Historical Society; Greensboro Symphony; and the United Arts Council. Mrs. Barbee served on the board of directors of the Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross and was secretary of the Board. She was chairman of the Residential United Fund Drive for three years, 1960, 1961 and 1962. In 1961, she became a National Garden Club Accredited Flower Show Judge. She received volunteer service awards from Moses Cone Hospital and from the American Red Cross. Mrs. Barbee was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was Circle Chairman, Sunday school teacher and active in the Women of the Church.

Mrs. Barbee loved art, music, bridge and traveling. She was interested in genealogy and authored a book on her family's history. She enjoyed oil painting and pastel drawing. Many family members have in their homes treasured portraits that she created. As a young adult, she played golf on the Greensboro Country Club Women's Golf Team and played tennis recreationally. She also enjoyed needlework and crafts.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Wynetta D Hunt, affectionately referred to as Dee, for the skilled and devoted care she provided Mrs. Barbee in her latter years.

BLADENBORO -- Faye Blanchard Herndon, 69, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at her residence.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Herndon of the home; two daughters, Apryll Stanley of Bladenboro and Harriet Williams of Raeford; one brother, Connie Huff (Butch) Blanchard of Durham; and one sister, Cathie Hamlett of Asheville; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Newkirk McEachin

WILLARD -- Phyllis Newkirk McEachin died Monday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from Snow Hill Baptist Church, Ivanhoe.

Mrs. McEachin was the daughter of the late Julius and Hattie Melvin Newkirk.

She is survived by her husband, Jim McEachin of the home; Tabatha McEachin of Willard, Patricia McEachin of Fla. and Priscilla Stephens of Durham; granchildren, Andria Imani Bishop of Fla. and William James (PJ) Stephens of Durham; special son, William Stephens of Durham; four sisters; and three brothers.

Lucille Hicks Thompson

WARRENTON -- Lucille Hicks Thompson was born January 8, 1922 in Vance County to John T. and Gussie Evans Hicks, and died January 19, 2010 at Treyburn Healthcare in Durham.

She was the widow of H. Fred Thompson and was a former resident of Warren County. Survivors include her daughter, Martha T. Tunstall and husband, Earl of Bahama; grandsons, Christopher Tunstall of Raleigh and Gregory Tunstall of Bahama; brother, Arthur Hicks and wife, Jessie, of Greensboro. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sue H. Grahl and Pearl H. Finch; and brothers, Lewis Hicks, Pryor Hicks, Fenner Hicks and Joseph Hicks.

Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of St. Leo's Nursing School in Greensboro, and was a registered nurse who devoted her life to caring for others, retiring from Warren General Hospital. She joined Shocco Methodist Church at an early age, and later was a member of Hebron Methodist Church and Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Funeral services conducted by Dr. John Bergland will be held Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Hebron Methodist Church with burial following in the Jerusalem United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jerusalem United Methodist Church following interment.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to Hebron Methodist Church, PO Box 595, Warrenton, NC 27589.
