DURHAM — Three Duke University freshmen who were members of the football team are due for initial appearances in Durham County District Court this morning on charges of discharging a firearm on educational property.

The teens also could face more charges, according to Duke Police Chief John Dailey.

“We’re still investigating,” Dailey said Monday. “As far as whether alcohol was involved and if there will be other charges, there may be additional charges, although I don’t anticipate any additional charges to other students.”

The students are John Galbraith Drew, 18, of Midland, Ga.; Kyle Keyston Griswould, 18, of Midland, Ga.; and Brandon Riley Putnam, 19, of Peachtree City, Ga. They were released from the Durham County Jail after posting $40,000 bonds, a jail spokesman said Monday.

Following the charges, they were kicked off the football squad, and the university has determined they will not be allowed to return to campus pending resolution of the charges.

Duke police said that about 3 a.m. Sunday, they heard gunfire from a vehicle near Jarvis dormitory on East Campus. The vehicle was later found in the Blackwell dorm hall parking lot, also on East Campus. They traced it to one of the students who has been charged. The investigation determined the gun was fired on Campus Drive.

Police said no one was injured, and the semiautomatic handgun was recovered. They said the students were not shooting at anything, but firing into the air.

Drew, a defensive tackle, played in all 12 games last fall; Griswould, a running back, and Putnam, a defensive end, saw no game action last year.

No overland, you're wrong again. I don't beleive in all of the victim of your surroundings crap; in fact that's the problem I have with manyof my Democrats. I say good enough for them and they should indeed get the full wrath of the law. What I'm saying to all of you white people with your steryotypes is that all blacks aren't crooks, thugs, on welfare, speak broken english, want hand outs or even want to be part of your world. I beleive in the Bill Cosby tough love message and these guys deserve everything they get. The difference between you and me is the fact that I say these things because I actually care and don't want others to make the same stupid mistake. So to you Overland, go screw yourself because you don't know me and can not anticipate I will will respond or think. You don't have the mental capacity nor the educational backing to begin to understand a "brotha" like me.

Sorry Zulunoir. The pictures I saw Sunday night all three were black. A free education at Duke, out the window because three young men cannot abide by simple rules. I would call them priviledged jerks. Now you will tell us how they came from a poor background and did not know any better. Go crawl back under your racist rock.

zulunoir, if in fact your background is as you say, than the race baiting you have engaged in on this board indicates that you learned little or nothing from your good life opportunities. Rather than sitting here blasting the Duke folks and others, you should take your supposed knowledge and experience back to your fellow african americans and show them how to get out of their unhappy, poor lifestyles. Show them the better way. Be a person they can look up to instead of a typical entitlement whiner!!

I guess we can't win them all then can we. You forgot to add to the crimes @ duke that fact that there has been rapist and molestors in that list of crimes. Do your research. And to TrinityRez, I didn't grow in the hell hole known as Durham, nor did I grow up in the "hood." I grew up a priveleged black boy in a white neighborhood. I guess that how I can smell a room full of racist when I see them. Not only am I highly educated, I am a product of educated professional parents. We've always said that a white man's fear is an educated black man.

zulunoir can cross his fingers and hope all he wants but the three thugs shooting the guns on campus are the same thug types found on Liberty street. And the things the duke students get away with are not murder, they are nuisance crimes, drinking, partying, and the like. Its just too bad the three priveleged jerks that just happened to get into Duke, and probably only because they can play football, were thugs themselves. And yes, alcohol did play, they had just left Shooters.

What I've been saying the whole time; the crime is not just on Liberty Street and Holloway Street. Those priveleged jerks of Duke Students been getting away with "murder" for years while the DPD just looked the other way. I hope these idiots receive the full wrath of the low, and I cross my fingers and hope they weren't black. With names like Putnum, Drew, and Griswould, they sound as Nordic as they come; of course they'll just hire some high priced lawyer to get them off like them lacross racists.
