Field hockey legend to speak

DURHAM -- UNC Chapel Hill field hockey coach Karen Shelton will be the guest speaker at Wednesday's noon meeting of the Durham Sports Club at Croasdaile Country Club.

Shelton has led UNC to six NCAA titles -- most recently last year, six NCAA runner-up finishes, 16 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 27 winning seasons since she arrived at UNC in 1981. She is a five-time national coach of the year -- including 2009 -- and eight-time ACC coach of the year.

She will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in May as part of its 2010 class.

Admission to the sports club luncheon for visitors -- the public is invited -- is $20.

The club's guest for its next meeting, Feb. 3, is Chris Richards, first baseman for the 2009 minor league champion Durham Bulls.

MLK Jr. Blood Drive this week

DURHAM -- The public is invited to participate in N.C. Central University's Martin Luther King Jr. Blood Drive, Jan. 18-20, at NCCU's Miller Morgan Building on Nelson Street off Fayetteville Street.

The drive will run from 3-7:30 p.m. today, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon-5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gardening workshop set

DURHAM -- Gardeners interested in learning how to create productive garden beds while protecting Durham's water quality at will get their chance at a workshop focusing on sustainable garden management techniques.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15, workshop participants will learn about a wide variety of techniques to help protect Durham's water sources, such as how to manage soil for best results, smart watering techniques, how to install rain gardens and how to create raised vegetable beds.

The workshop will be held at the Durham County Cooperative Extension, 721 Foster St. Cost is $25 per person, which includes lunch. Registration deadline is Feb. 8.

AARP chapter to meet Wed.

DURHAM -- The Durham Chapter of the American Association for Retired People -- 189 -- will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee Ave.

Bill Wilson, legislative liaison for the N.C. AARP state office, will be the guest speaker

Wilson will discussed proposed health care bills and how retirees may be affected.

H1N1 shots to be offered

DURHAM --Durham Regent retirement community, 3007 Pickett Road, will host an H1N1 flu shot clinic from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.

Seasonal flu vaccinations will also be available. The event is open to the public and is handicap accessible.
