Janet Walker Johnson
DURHAM -- Mrs. Janet Walker Johnson, 67, of Durham passed away at Durham Regional Hospital late Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Johnson was born in Lincoln County, and has been a resident of Durham for over 36 years. She is the daughter of the late Klutz E. and Margaret Newton.
She is survived by her husband, Clinton Paul Johnson of Durham; a daughter, Eleanor Walker of Durham; two sons, Todd Walker and wife, Rebecca of Timberlake, and Henry "Peanut" Walker of Durham; a brother, Boyd Newton of Timberlake; three grandchildren, Calvin Milligan, Matt Walker, and Taylor Ford; and two great grandchildren, Tucker and Landon Milligan.
The Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20 at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Johnny Hewett officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Kay Lowery Porterfield
DURHAM -- Mrs. Kay Lowery Porterfield, 85, a resident of Durham, died early Sunday morning in Durham Regional Hospital.
Born November 15, 1924, in Person County, Kay was the daughter of the late Joliff Greene and Bessie Smart Lowery. She attended the Person County schools, graduating from Bethel Hill High School. Kay moved to Durham to work at the Model Laundry, and later Porterfield Hardware. There she met her husband, Douglas W. Porterfield, and they were married in 1950. A bookkeeper gifted at working with numbers, Kay was employed with Copeland Plumbing and later with Southern States.
Her summer evenings were spent tending the huge vegetable garden that she loved. Her meals of fresh vegetables were greatly enjoyed by her family. Kay's other passion was working with preschoolers in the Grace Baptist Church Sunday School, which she did for many years. Kay cherished each holiday she spent with her siblings, and served as a caregiver for several of them during health crises in their lives.
Surviving are her son, Doug Porterfield, Jr., and wife Priscilla of Boone; her daughter, Susan Raper and husband Burke of Durham, three sisters, Eunice Belcher of Raleigh, Hazel Service of Toccoa, Georgia, and Alice Hakim of Navoto, California, a special sister-in-law, Sophie Lowery of Durham, and many dear nieces and nephews. Her husband died March 29, 1995. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, Dr. Gerald C. Goodwin and Rev. Gary M. Bailey officiating. Graveside funeral services will precede the memorial service at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m.

Dr. Paul Scagnelli
DURHAM -- Dr. Paul Scagnelli, son of the late Julia and Paul Scagnelli, Sr., died on January 16 at the Hock Family Center.
Paul was born in 1932 in Bronx, NY and grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953, he attended graduate school at Cornell University. From 1955 to 1959, Paul worked in Saudi Arabia as a Personnel Analyst for the Arabian American Oil Company. For the next two years he served as personnel manager for Peterbilt Motor Co. in Newark, California.
In 1962 Paul became a Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology at Duke University. After receiving his doctorate, he did a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University and the VA hospital in Durham, NC, and an internship at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
He was awarded the Wallach Award in 1967 as the outstanding Psychology Intern at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He received the Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, 1967-1968, from Duke's Psychology Department, where he taught courses in child development.
Paul's professional life in Durham as a psychologist included: directing the Durham County Mental Health Outpatient Clinic, conducting individual and group psychotherapy, mental evaluations for Disability Determination Services and psychological testing, managing a Crisis and Suicide program, and working with patients in an Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center. For seven years Dr. Scagnelli taught graduate and undergraduate courses at North Carolina Central University as an Associate Professor of Psychology.
His family, tennis and writing gave him much pleasure. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Croasdaile Village Retirement Community has been his home since 2006.
Paul leaves behind his wife, Elaine Fitch Scagnelli of Durham, his daughter, Alaina Elliott and her husband Ed Elliott of Durham, his son, Marc Scagnelli of Cary; grandchildren, Ryan Johnson, Austin Johnson, and Nicholas Johnson; and siblings, James Scagnelli, Lorraine Rossi and Jean Caruso.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20. A reception will follow in Johnson Hall.

Tennisha Eronda Blount Webb
DURHAM -- Mrs. Tennisha Eronda Blount Webb, 31, of 54-H Dayton St., died Monday, January 11, 2010 at Duke University Hospital. She was a native of Plymouth, NC. She was formerly employed by the Families First Program and First Presbyterian Church day School.
She attended Fayetteville State University.
Survivors include her husband, terry Lamont Webb; sons, Jaseth Jared Fike, 12, of Chapel Hill and Nahshon Semaj Blount, 9 of Durham; loving daughter, Yakima Renee Harris, 8, of Durham.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesdayat First Chronicles Community Church, 1306 Lincoln St. with Rev. Pebbles Lindsay-Lucas, officiating. Family visitation, one hour prior to service. Viewing, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

Richard Harvey Wright III
DURHAM -- Richard Harvey Wright III, 79, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Durham Regional Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Duke University Chapel.
The family will receive friends in their home Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and following the memorial service on Wednesday.

Alva 'Al' F. Martin Jr.
DURHAM -- Alva 'Al' F. Martin Jr., 84, of Kernersville died January 16, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center.
The family will receive friends Monday January 18 from 6:00 to 7:15 in the parlor at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC. The funeral service will follow in the sanctuary at 7:30 and will be conducted by the Reverends Dale Hilton and Dr. Jeff Patterson.
A graveside Service will be held Tuesday January 19 at 11 a.m. in the Hopewell United Methodist Church cemetery in Sherrills Ford.
Born September 16, 1925 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Alva F. and Ida Martin. He was a graduate of Sherrills Ford High School, Brevard Junior College, and Catawba College. He retired from Burlington Cotton Company in Greenville, SC. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Mae Sherrill; a brother, Boyd Martin; a sister, Golda White; a sister, Elva Drum; and a sister, Hazel Moose.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife Ann James Martin; a daughter and son in law, Dianne and Ken Brown of High Point; a son and daughter in law, Curtis and Lynn Martin of High Point; a son and daughter in law, Doug and Sabrina Martin of Irmo, S.C.; a stepson, Scott Dunn of Kernersville; seven grandchildren; Ken Brown Jr., Christy Meadows , Darren Brown, Paul Martin, John Martin, Elena Martin, and Drew Martin; and three great grandchildren, Mason Hughes, Matthew Meadows, and Michael Meadows; a sister, Alice Lutz of Terrell.
The family would like to recognize Brenda Whitmore who provided comfort and care to Mr. Martin in recent years.
