Sophie Eloise Daniel
DURHAM -- Sophie Eloise Daniel, 55, passed away January 8, 2010 at the Duke Hock Pavilion in Durham after a courageous and brave battle with cancer.
Sophie was born January 17, 1954 in Alexandria, Virginia to the late Katherine Dusenberry Daniel and David Oscar Daniel Jr.
She spent most of her childhood in Durham. She was a 1973 graduate of Jordan High School, a 1973 Debutante, and a 1977 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, she worked for the State of NC in the library system of UNC-Chapel Hill for about 10 years. She relocated to the Washington, DC area where she attended Gallaudet University.
In the DC area, she worked for various non-profit groups and the State of Maryland as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. She entered civil service federal employment working for the Department of the Army as an equal employment opportunity specialist. In this capacity, she worked for a year in Wurzburg, Germany.
She retired on disability from the Federal Government in 2008 after her cancer diagnosis. She sought treatment for her cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas where she lived for about 16 months. She knew no one when she moved to Texas but met many wonderful people who helped her in various ways as she went through various cancer treatments.
Sophie loved to travel and traveled extensively in Europe during her employment in Germany. She was a seeker of knowledge, inquisitive about the world around her and pushed herself to participate in as many life experiences as she could. Her favorite pastimes were collecting books and knitting. She belonged to various knitting groups.
Sophie was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham and a member of the DAR chapter in the Washington, DC area.
Sophie is survived by her brother, David O. Daniel III of Chicago, Illinois; her sister, Katherine (Kathy) Daniel Chaney of Durham; her nephew, Steven Chaney of Chicago, Illinois; and her niece, Jennifer Chaney Killingsworth of Jacksonville.
A memorial service will be offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 in the sanctuary of Epworth United Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Road, Durham. The Reverend Hope Vickers will preside.
Family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately after the service.

Timothy Hubert Jefferson
DURHAM -- Timothy Hubert Jefferson, age 52, formerly of Durham, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Splendora, Texas after a valiant battle with stomach cancer.
Tim was born May 10, 1957 in Concord. He was predeceased by his father, James F. Jefferson; his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Margaret Jefferson; and his maternal grandparents, Hubert and Vivian Stewart.
Tim graduated from Hillside High School and while living in Durham was employed with The Durham Morning Herald. After moving to Roxboro he was employed with North Main IGA and later with CRST Trucking Company as a long distance driver. In 2007 Tim relocated to Texas and worked with Brookshire Brothers prior to his illness.
He was an avid Duke fan, loved the Dallas Cowboys, and followed the Nascar circuit. He will especially be remembered for his fight with cancer and his will to live. After being diagnosed with cancer and given a prognosis of six months, Tim, beyond all odds lived more than a year past his initial prognosis.
Tim is survived by his loving fiance, Vickie Elliott of Texas; his mother, Virginia Stewart Jefferson Midgette of Durham; his sister, Susan J. Cole and husband, Steve, of Hillsborough; his uncle and aunt, Bo and Frances Carrigan of Durham; his great aunt, Lucille Rich of Durham; and many cousins.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Howerton Bryan Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Tim's fiance, Vickie, for the love and care she bestowed upon him, especially throughout the past 18 months.
Leo Mixon Malone
DURHAM -- Mrs. Leo Mixon Malone, 91, of 309 Bon Air Ave., died on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
Mrs. Malone was born in Toombs County, Georgia, to the late George and Lilly Rachel Mixon. She was a member of Smith Chapel Baptist Church for 42 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Edwin Malone; son, Frank Kight; brothers, George 'Bo' Mixon, Luther 'LK' Mixon, Thadys Mixon; and a sister, Mary Lou Dowd.
She is survived by two brothers, Vernon Talmadge Kight and wife, Edna, of Juliette, Ga. and Charles Edwin Kight and wife, Lorraine, of Fayetteville; one daughter, Jeanette Kight Hill of Durham; two brothers, Richard 'RC' Mixon of Durham and Jack Edward Mixon of Atlanta Ga.; three sisters, Hazel Exley, of Savannah, Ga., Evelyn Bryant of South Haven, Miss. and Roberta Urbanski of Binghamton, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Betty King; and 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smith Chapel Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Jerry L. Hooper. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Dorothy 'Dot' Nelson
DURHAM -- Mrs. Dorothy 'Dot' Nelson, resident of Croasdaile Village passed away, Friday, January 8, 2010.
She was born in Wilson County, the daughter of the late Susan Hollowell Lee and Junius 'Doon' B. Lee. Mrs. Nelson was a retired Registered Nurse who graduated from Watts School Nursing in 1945.
She was a member of Braggtown Baptist Church, where she was extremely active prior to her illness serving in such roles as Director of Women's Missionary Union, Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School Director and church Financial Secretary. Mrs. Nelson was also a volunteer Registered Nurse for the Red Cross. She worked many tireless hours for the Bloodmobile and Disaster Relief Services across the Eastern United States.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Frank D. Nelson; daughter, Susan Nelson Parker and husband, Tommy, of Durham; two sons, Michael Lee Nelson and wife, Joyce, of Topsail Island and Charles 'Chuck' David Nelson of Wilmington; a sister, Catherine Lee Bass of Four Oaks; seven grandchildren, Michole Nelson, Gabriel Nelson and wife, Angiee, David Parker and wife, Kelly, Meredith Falcon and husband, Ryan, Jordan Parker, Trevor Nelson, and Emma Nelson; and one great granddaughter, Payton Dawn Parker.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Braggtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Teseniar officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

DURHAM -- Jerry Rogers passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 12th with his family by his side. He was 69 years old.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jahala 'Jadie' Rogers; his son, Steven Rogers; his daughter, Stephanie Austin; his son-in-law, R. Mark Austin; and his four grandchildren, Drew Austin, Nicole Rogers, Haley Rogers, and Jared Austin.

Hazel Dawn Malone Underwood
DURHAM -- Hazel Dawn Malone Underwood of 2811 Enchanted Landing Court, Katy Texas, passed away quietly on Monday, January 11, 2010 after several months of declining health.
Hazel was born and raised in Durham, and spent almost all her adult life there until moving to Texas in 2006. She graduated from Durham High School in 1940 and as many of the members of her generation, joined the United States Navy WAVES program after the US entered into World War II. She trained in Stillwater Okla. and Milledgeville Ga. an attained a Yeoman 2nd Class rating and served at various duty stations before her discharge in late 1944.
Hazel continued her involvement and relationship with our Nations military men and women by working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham for over 25 years retiring in 1978.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Curtis Malone and Lois Dowdy Malone. She is survived by her son, John Curtis Underwood and his wife, Rebecca Ann Underwood, of Katy Texas; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Underwood Drouin of Chicago Ill., Christine Dawn Underwood of Houston Texas and Michael Curtis Underwood of Baton Rouge, La.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Howerton Bryan Funeral Chapel, Robert Adcock officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B.

BURLINGTON -- Louise Sharpe Prince died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Brookwood Village at Edgewood in Burlington. She was 82 years old.
Louise is survived by two of her children, Paula Sigmon Harris of Durham and Lynda Sigmon Williams of Newton Grove. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Owsley of New Port Richy Florida. She is predeceased by her middle daughter, Patricia (Patti-Ann) Sigmon; and by her brother, P.M. Sharpe of Mt. Airy.

MEBANE -- Graham McDonald Russell Sr., 79, 104 Somerset Ct., died Monday January 11, 2010 at The Brian Center in Durham.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeanette Laton Russell; sons, Graham M. Russell Jr. and Wife, Sheila, of Mebane, Greg A. Eleanor Fitzpatrick Neyhart
CHAPEL HILL -- Eleanor Fitzpatrick Neyhart, 89, of the Carolina House of Chapel Hill, passed away peacefully January 11, 2010, after a brief illness.
Born December 10, 1920 in Lynn, Massachusetts, Eleanor was the only child of William and Rita Fitzpatrick. Surrounded by a loving Irish Catholic family, Eleanor's childhood years were spent in Lynn, Massachusetts and Ridgway, Pennsylvania.
Eleanor completed her higher education at Allegheny College and Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a degree in Accounting in 1942. After completing her education, Eleanor was employed as one of the first female accountants at the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y. during the 1940s and 1950s. She spent most of her adult life in the Rochester, N.Y. area where she married James Henry Neyhart of Rochester, N.Y. in 1957. They lived in Penfield, N.Y. throughout their marriage, and in 2008, Eleanor moved to North Carolina to be near her family after the death of her husband. Eleanor's lifelong interests included golf, needlework, ballroom dancing, flower gardening, and jazz music. She volunteered many hours at the Penfield, N.Y. symphony orchestra.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband in 2006. Eleanor is survived by her son, Gregory Allen Neyhart of Chapel Hill and his wife, Clara Danziger Neyhart; as well as two grandchildren, Emily Clara Neyhart and Christopher Cole Neyhart of Chapel Hill.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill.

CHAPEL HILL -- Ms. Stella Ray Sutter, 66, a longtime resident of Chapel Hill, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009, at UNC Chapel Hill Memorial Hospital.
An active member of the Triangle Dart League since its inception in 1971, Ms. Sutter officially served as League Secretary for many years. Responsible for recruiting countless new players into the League, Ms. Sutter often welcomed novice darters to her own team, passing on to them an enduring fondness and deep respect for the sport.
Born in Evansville, Indiana, she moved to Jonesborough (Jonesboro), Tenn. with her parents, the late Raymond O. and Mary Sutter, as a young girl. Surviving are her son, Darrell Allen Schwartz; and daughter, Laurel Kathleen Schwartz, both of Chapel Hill.
