Medicare help program slated

DURHAM -- The Council for Senior Citizens, Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), and the Triangle J Area Agency on Aging will assist eligible seniors in signing up for extra pelp on their Medicare prescription drug costs as part of the Relay for Extra Help.

The event will run from 1-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Durham Center for Senior Life at 406 Rigsbee Ave.

Help may be available to Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and assets to help pay premiums, deductibles and co-pays, but beneficiaries have to apply.

The following items are required to complete the assistance applications:

n Social security and Medicare cards.

n Any letters from Medicare or Social Security.

n Information on Individual Retirement Accounts.

n Bank account statements.

n Payroll slips.

n Income tax documents.

n Investment statements.

Individuals may also apply on-line at www.ssa.gov or by calling NC SHIIP at 1(800) 443-9354.

Maze at DPAC date is changed

DURHAM -- The concert date for An Evening with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly has been rescheduled. Because of changes in the tour routing, management officials with Frankie Beverly and Maze have rescheduled their Jan. 23 concert at the Durham Performing Arts Center to Feb. 12.

Fans who already purchased tickets should keep them. They will be honored at the new date. For more information, call DPAC at (919) 680-2787.

Art Guild names executive director

DURHAM -- The Durham Art Guild has named Taj Forer its new executive director.

Forer had served as executive director of Daylight Community Arts Foundation, Inc., a Chapel Hill-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing the practice of documentary photography.

Forer, a celebrated photographer himself, studied at UNC Chapel Hill, where he received the master of fine arts degree. In addition to extensive experience in the non-profit sector, Forer is also a working artist whose exhibition locations have included: Branch Gallery in Durham; Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and Galeria Senda in Barcelona, Spain. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the N.C. Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, and the collection of Sir Elton John.

He begins work Monday.
