DURHAM -- Mrs. Vera Lee Cates Herring, 87, resident of Durham, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010. Active in her community and church until her death, she was a member of Temple Baptist Church and retired from West Durham Lumber Company. Born in Person County, NC, she moved to Durham with her parents, the late Lillian Horton Cates and William Samuel Cates as a young girl.
Mrs. Herring was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry Wayne Quinn.
Surviving are her husband, Edward Earl Herring; son, William Boyce Quinn and wife, Kay; daughter, Patricia H. Muhammad and husband, Wajeh; son, Edward E. Herring Jr. and wife, Pamela; daughter in law, Kim Hawks Quinn; five grandchildren, Baxter Quinn, Flannery Q. Norton, Denise Capps, Kim Quinn, and Carly Herring; and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Section 17 with Rev. Norman Harris officiating. No visitation is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Temple Baptist Church, 4504 Sterling Dr., Durham, NC, 27712.

Alice Estelle O'Briant Watson
DURHAM -- Mrs. Alice Estelle O'Briant Watson, 95, of Durham, died at Carver Living Center on Monday, January 11, 2010.
Mrs. Watson was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the daughter of the late John Noxie O'Briant and Minnie Hodges O'Briant. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for over 50 years. Mrs. Watson graduated from Bethesda High School where she played on the women's basketball team.
She is survived by her son, Charles Coy Watson and wife, Linda, of Durham; daughter, Norma Watson Grady and husband, Mike, of Raleigh; and three grandchildren, Charlie Watson, Karen Sambogna and Michael Sean Grady.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Jody Griffin. Interment will be in the Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service at Calvary Baptist Church and other times at the home of her son, Charles Watson. Graham McDonald Russell Sr.
MEBANE -- Graham McDonald Russell Sr., age 79, 104 Somerset Ct., died Monday, January 11, 2010 at The Brian Center in Durham. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his sons, Graham M. Russell Jr. and wife, Sheila, of Mebane, Greg A. Russell and wife, Cheryl, of Asheboro; grandchildren, Amber Russell, Grant Russell, both of Mebane, Laton Russell, Ashton Russell, Preston Russell and Allyson Russell of Asheboro; sister, Carrie Russell Wiggins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover McDonald Russell and Pauline Stevens Russell.
Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at McClure Funeral Service Chapel in Mebane with the Rev. Dennis Ricks officiating.

CREEDMOOR -- Roy A. Rutledge, 87, a resident of 111 Webb Place, Oxford, died Sunday, January 10th at Brantwood Nursing Home.
A native of Lynchburg County, Va., the son of the late Richard and Ola Verns Rutledge, he was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, an army veteran of WWII and was retired from Lee Dying County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Tommy Robertson and Dr. Marc Tilley. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Powers and Roger McLamb of Stem, Judy Stem and Larry Claiborne of Oxford; two sons, Roy Rutledge Jr. (Ginger) of Stem, Wayne Rutledge (Peggy) of Creedmoor; a sister, Annie Lee Majors of Chase City, Va.; three brothers, Amos Rutledge of Stovall, Frank Rutledge of Lynchburg, Va., Sam Rutledge of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Martha Bacon Hunt Ball
HILLSBOROUGH -- Ms. Martha Bacon Hunt Ball, 97, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 11, 2010. Mrs. Ball was the daughter of the late James and Alice Hunt. She was preceded in death by her two sons, James (Red) Ball and Robert Ball; two grandsons, Mark Rudd and Gary Ball; one sister, Ruth Layton; four brothers, George Hunt, Joe Hunt, Mallie (Mal) Hunt and Lonnie Hunt.
Ms. Ball retired from Thalheimers as a seamstress and also worked at Belk's as a part-time seamstress.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church prior to joining First Baptist Church of Hillsborough in 1989.
Ms. Ball is survived by one daughter, Joyce (McKenny) Beasley; five grandchildren, Wayne (Kim) Ball of Bahama, David Ball and Brian Ball of Durham, Beverly (Tommy) Moore of Hillsborough and Tammy Mitchell of Hurdle Mills; seven great grandchildren, Mackenzie Ball, Kassidy Ball, David Ball, II, Michael Moore, Robert Dale Moore, Natasha Dixon and Christy Mitchell; two great great grandchildren, Ivrionna Mitchell and Nezakiah Lunsford.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hillsborough, officiated by the Rev. Randy Carter. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Pall bearers will be grandsons, Wayne Ball, David Ball, Brian Ball, Michael Robert Dale, and Tommy Moore. Patrick Michael Robeson
CHAPEL HILL -- Patrick Michael Robeson, 50, died Sunday at UNC Hospital. Patrick was employed as a master carpenter. He was predeceased by his father, Edward D. Robeson; and daughter, Rachael Ann Robeson. He loved people and especially his family. He loved to serve his Lord and said "addicts and prisoners need salvation too, I will go to the depths of hell to bring people to salvation."
Patrick is survived by his wife, Irene; his mother and step-father, Leatrice and Lawrence Henry; his children, Mary, Christopher, Shannon, Stuart, Michael, Dustin, Patrick II, Elizabeth, Jonathon, and Precious Joy; four brothers; and a sister; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. CLAYTON -- Herman L. Connell of Clayton, age 82, died peacefully at home on January 10 with his loving family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Lois Connell of Granville County; and four brothers, Nick, Nelson, Clarence and Crawford Connell; and two sisters, Helen Haskins and Lena Connell.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Connell; his son, Bernard Asa Morris of Oxford; and his daughter, Sandra Morris Smith of Clayton and their families. Also surviving are his nephews, Cleveland Connell, Bobby Haskins and Pete Connell; and his niece, Rachel Sugg and their families.
