Actors discuss craft on Monday

DURHAM -- Guest artists Ellen McLaughlin, Paul O'Brien and Christian Conn from PlayMakers' production of Arthur Miller's Tony Award-winning play "All My Sons," will discuss acting in a play written by one of America's greatest playwrights at 7 p.m. Monday at the Durham County Library main branch, 300 N. Roxboro St.

The program is free and open to the public.

McLaughlin is best known for her role of Angel in Tony Kushner's Angels in America on Broadway. McLaughlin is also a playwright, whose plays have been produced off Broadway, in regional theaters and internationally. Paul O'Brien has appeared in Broadway productions of Cymbeline, King Lear and Twelfth Night and has had numerous roles on television. Christian Conn, who plays Chris Keller, is making his PlayMakers debut. He has appeared in regional theatre productions including The Beaux' Stratagem and Love's Labor's Lost at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington.

PlayMakers will perform All My Sons from Jan. 27 through Feb. 14 at UNC Chapel Hill.

Gospel sing slated tonight

DURHAM -- The Durham Regent retirement community, 3007 Pickett Road, will host a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at 7:15 tonight featuring the Hinshaws of Bahama.

The public is invited and refreshments will be provided.

Also, Durham Regent is a collection site for blankets, sleeping bags and coats for the homeless as part of its "Seniors Serving Seniors" community outreach program.

Clean items may be dropped off at the retirement community.

MLK Jr. Parade sign-up open

DURHAM -- Organizers are still seeking participants for the eighth annual Durham Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade on at noon Jan. 16.

It's not too late for marching bands, school and church groups, step and dance teams, horses, cars, motorcycles, unique vehicles, clowns and more to sign up.

The theme is "Yesterday's Dream, Tomorrow's Reality."

Sewage spill cleared Thursday

DURHAM -- The city Department of Water Management reported a sanitary sewer was found overflowing at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Approximately 7,200 gallons of sewage spilled from a sewer at 4400 Thetford Road and discharged into state waters at an unnamed tributary of New Hope Creek.

City crews cleared the blockage -- caused by debris -- by 10:30 a.m. The area was being cleaned and disinfected and the city said there were no immediately visible adverse environmental impacts or hazards to persons or property.

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources was notified.

MLK municipal worker day set

DURHAM -- Durham will hold its annual City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Employee Observance Program. at noon Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.

Hundreds of city and county employees will reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and remember how their roles as public servants should be modeled after his ideals.

The event is free and open to the public.

J.D. Greear, pastor of The Summit Church of Durham, will deliver a thought-provoking message based on Dr. King's philosophy of service. Music will be provided by the City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass Choir.

Free H1N1 clinics scheduled today

DURHAM -- The county health department will host free, walk-in H1N1 vaccination clinics at three local schools from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today.

The locations are: Hillside High School, 3727 Fayetteville Road; Riverside High School, 3218 Rose of Sharon Road; and Neal Middle School, 201 Baptist Road.

Anyone can receive the H1N1 vaccine, except children under six months of age.
