DURHAM Tommy Eugene Davis

DURHAM -- Tommy Eugene Davis, 62, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 3:21 p.m.

Tommy was a native of Durham, the son of the late Leland Eugene and Bobbie Buffaloe Davis. He served in the U.S. Army and retired after 30 years from Overnite Trucking Company. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Carpenter.

He is survived by his mother, Bobbie Davis of Durham; son, Paul Davis of Durham; daughters, Pamela Pickard (John) of Durham, Bridget Carpenter (Chris) of Franklinton and Lesley Brothers (John Mark) of Chesterfield, Va.; grandchildren, Josiah, Jeremiah and Micah Brothers; Aaron and Curtis Pickard; Brandon Davis; and Jordan and Olivia Carpenter.

He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry Davis (Robin) of Oxford and Robert Davis of Franklinville; sisters, Terry McIntyre (Donald) of Salisbury, Mary Swann (Charles) and Lou Ann Hatcher (Carroll) of Columbia, S.C.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Rick Finley. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Saturday before the service from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church and at other times at 6031 Big Oak Drive, Durham, NC 27705. Flowers are acceptable.
James Louis 'Jimmy' Dyer Sr.



DURHAM -- Funeral services for Mr. James Louis 'Jimmy' Dyer Sr., 96, of 2227 Parkside Drive, will be held at noon Saturday at White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St. Family visitation, 30 minutes prior to service.

He retired from N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Co. after 40 years and was a United States Navy veteran. He was also a member of White Rock Baptist Church.

'James L' was married to Minnie Lee Dyer for over 50 years who predeceased him.

Survivors include three sons, James Jr., Edwin (Betty) and John (LaRetta); one daughter, Frances (James Stewart); special daughter, Lucy Rosser (Leon); grandchildren, Carol Koonts (Derek), Pamela Price (Terry), Justin Stewart (Dulche`), Valeria Wilson, Edwin Dyer Jr. and Stephen Rosser; sister-in-law, Maudine Lee; 10 great-grandchildren; special friend and companion, W. Juanita 'Nita' Norwood.

Viewing, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

Marvin Frederick High

DURHAM -- Marvin Frederick High, 89, of 8385 Wake Road, died January 7, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Durham. Born November 24, 1920, in Durham County, he was the son of the late John Frederick High and Myrtle Carver High.

Marvin was a brick mason for over 35 years and he enjoyed farming and gardening. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and he loved Good Hope Baptist Church were he was a longtime member.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Ellis High; son, Freddie High and wife, Debbie, of Siler City; daughters, Deborah Dismuke and husband, Charles, and Theresa O'Briant, both of Cary; brothers, Carver High of Leesburge, Fla.; Leon High of Whitaker; sister, Mildred Gallagher of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Woodrow High.

Funeral Services will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010 from Good Hope Baptist Church, Cary. The Reverend Keith Vaughan will preside. Burial with military honors will follow in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

William "Billy" Frederick Nuchurch



DURHAM -- Mr. William "Billy" Frederick Nuchurch, 62, of 105 Allgood St., died Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Durham Regional Hospital. His service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, January 11 at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church. The family will receive friends on Monday from 12 to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the church.

"Billy" is survived by three sons, Michael J. Taylor, William F. Nuchurch Jr. and Mark J. Nuchurch; his mother, Mrs. Phyllis H. Nuchurch; three sisters, Ethel Y. Harris, Ethel L. McClinton and Sylvia N. Branch; two brothers, Joe E. Nuchurch and Louis E. Nuchurch. There will be a public viewing on Sunday, Jan. 10 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Burthey Funeral Chapel.

Maria Romach

DURHAM -- Maria Romach, 96, died peacefully at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham on Thursday, January 7, 2010. Maria resided in Durham for the past 10 years. Prior to that she resided in Southern New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; and all of her siblings. Survivors include her son, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; and granddaughter, Nicole, all of Durham. Services and funeral will be held in Pennsylvania.

Thanks to the wonderful nursing staff at Hillcrest Convalescent Center for their caring support this past year.

Mary Louise Sligh



DURHAM -- Mary Louise Sligh, 86, died January 7, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.

Ms. Sligh was born and raised in Durham. She graduated from Durham High School in 1941. She was employed for many years with the Durham County Department of Social Services, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Durham Women's Business Association, the Durham Garden Club, and Lakewood United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school to children. She was a kind, caring, considerate person who was a good Christian, good neighbor, good friend to everyone, and a wonderful sister and aunt.

Ms. Sligh is survived by her sister, Violet (Devy) Daves of Durham; brother, Allen Sligh Jr. of Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga.; seven nieces and nephews; and 12 great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Stephens. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Daisy M. Flowers Wall

DURHAM -- Mrs. Daisy M. Flowers Wall, 94, of Durham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2010.

Daisy was born in Johnston County on March 19, 1915 to the late Josh W. Flowers and Mamie Tomlinson Flowers. She moved to Durham in 1933.

She was loved by all who knew her for all her selfless giving to her family and friends. Daisy Wall, with her long love, Harvey Wall led her family to worship regularly and sincerely at Gorman Baptist Church. She lived the example of the purpose of life is to matter, to be productive and to make a difference. She was the 'rock' and center of her family and extended family. She held her family together alone after her beloved Harvey passed away in 1986 and continued to show love beyond their 53 years of marriage. She was a beautician and professional manager for 20 years, while caring for her family. She was an active member for 70 years at Gorman Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Friendship Bible Class. She was an active supporter of the church and the Gorman Christian Academy.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole Summers and husband, George, of Manning, S.C.; her son, Buster Wall and wife, Darlene, of Durham; grandchildren, Carla Kirkland (Lance), Mamie Wilson (Tommy), Josh Wall (Michelle), Lauren Wall and Harvey A. Wall III; great-grandchildren, Ty Wilson, Nathan Kirkland, Brianna Kirkland and Jenna Wall; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gorman Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. C.J. Bordeaux and Dr. Julian Motley. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be H.A. Wall III, Josh Wall, George Summers, Tommy Wilson, Lance Kirkland, Al Wall, Alf Wall, Tommy Garner and Bob May.

Dennis Cleveland Browning

BULLOCK -- Mr. Dennis Cleveland Browning of Bullock died Jan. 7 at the age of 84. He was a retired tobacco processor for American Tobacco Co.and was a US Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Browning and Lucy Bowes Wiggins Browning; two sisters, Elsie McCorkle and Ethel Lassiter; and two brothers, Alton and William "Buddy" Browning.

James Vernard Adams Sr.

HILLSBOROUGH -- James Vernard Adams Sr., 76, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010, in Veterans Administration Hospital. He was native of Orange County.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa A. Hicks, Selma, and Pam Adams, Wilmington; two sons, James V. Adams Jr., and Matthew W. Adams, Hillsborough; one brother, Edward Adams, Laurinburg; and a lifetime friend, Doris Wilson. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joy Marie Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. John Gaither. Burial will be in the Hillsborough Town Cemetery. John Lindsey Cook Jr.

HILLSBOROUGH -- John Lindsey Cook Jr., 67, died Monday, January 4, 2010. He was born in Durham and attended the Durham schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for Pilot Freight Carriers for 20 years. He worked for the Town of Hillsborough for 10 years until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the Hillsborough United Methodist Church, the Men's Wednesday Morning Bible Study, and HUMC Men's Breakfast. Mr. Cook loved his family, was a good husband for 47 years, a wonderful father, grandfather and wonderful friend to all that knew him. He bowled in a league on Thursday nights at Palace Point in Roxboro and his team was called "Ain't Got a Clue." He was a member of the Striper Fishing Club and was called Cook Man on Jordan Lake where he fished with many fishing friends. He especially enjoyed blue grass music and composed and wrote a lot of songs. He played the guitar for years with many people. He was teaching himself the banjo. His favorite pal was "Toots" his fishing buddy, his constant companion.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita Turner Cook; his son, Michael "Todd" Cook (Jill), Hillsborough; his daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) C. Bolick (Joe), Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren who were the apple of his eyes, Jason Cook, Lindsey Cook, and Hannah Bolick; two sisters, Mary Lee Sparks (Phillip), Burnsville, and Linda Evans, Kaufman, Texas; and two brothers, David Dore (Martha), Texas, and Tommy Cook (Kim), Hillsborough.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hillsborough United Methodist Church by the Rev. Al Horne. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church or to St. Jude's Hospital. Richard Michael Owen



WENDELL -- Mr. Richard Michael Owen, 67, died early Thursday at his home. Mr. Owen was born in Marysville, Ohio, the son of Stena Fletcher Owen and the late Richard Loree Owen. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Mysis of Raleigh.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Owen is survived by his wife, Jeannette Owen; daughter, Teresa Owen Hawkins and husband, David; son, Rodney Phillip Owen; brothers, Steve Owen and Robert Owen; sisters, Betsy Carter and Laurie Owen; grandchildren, Parker Hawkins, Jackson Hawkins and Sawyer Hawkins; mother in law, Geneva J. Smith; and sisters in law, Becky Apple and Joy Owen.

Graveside service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery with Pastor Terry Beatty officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to 2:15 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Glemma Lucille Reese

HOLLY SPRINGS -- Glemma Lucille Reese, age 84, died January 6, 2010 at WakeMed Hospital in Cary. She was born July 26, 1925, in Hitchins, Ky. to Milford Long and Ethel McGuire Long.

A long-time resident of Huntington, W.Va., Glemma is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Dominick and her husband, Walter, of Holly Springs; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Reese; and three brothers.

Ronald Joseph 'Bud' Taylor

CAPE CARTERET -- Ronald Joseph 'Bud' Taylor, 80, of Cape Carteret died at his home January 6, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Carrie Taylor; brothers, W.C., Rufus and Richard Taylor; and his grandson, Matthew Taylor Smith. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. After retirement, Bud enjoyed fishing at the Bogue Inlet Pier.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mausoleum chapel at Sea Side Memorial Swansboro with the Reverend Hal Pope officiating.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Lydia Renn Taylor of the home; two daughters, Cathy Taylor Johanns and her husband, Scott, of Rougemont and Laura Taylor Smith and her husband, William, of Morehead City; four grandchildren, Zachary Johanns and his wife, Jaclyn, Carrie Tripp and her husband, Phillip, Nicholas Johanns and Stevie Smith; two great grandchildren, Gwyneth and Elizabeth Johanns.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro.
