Only 1 holiday fire reported
CHAPEL HILL -- The Chapel Hill Fire Department's "Keep the Wreath Green" program was a success last year, with only one fire being reported during the holiday season, according to the department.
On Dec. 1, 2009, the Chapel Hill Fire Department displayed an illuminated wreath on the front of Fire Station No. 1, located at 403 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The wreath began the holiday season filled with green lights. For each residential fire in Chapel Hill through New Year's Day, a green bulb was replaced with a red one. The department reported it replaced only one green bulb with a red bulb.
In 2007, there were four structure fires in Chapel Hill during the holiday season, with one being extinguished by a residential sprinkler system. In 2008, there was just one structure fire during the same time period.
Cheerwine picks its first 'Czar'
CHAPEL HILL -- After kicking off a contest in September to find a UNC Chapel Hill student to represent its brand, Cheerwine crowned its first "Czar of Chillocity" on Thursday -- sophomore Lauren Odom of Hendersonville, N.C.
Odom will be rewarded for hanging out, mingling and sampling Cheerwine at specified events and popular student hangouts in 2010, spreading "cheer" and helping to fuel a grassroots movement on campus.
Students who wanted to be considered for the position uploaded videos of themselves to CheerwineCzar.com explaining why they'd make the best Czar. Cheerwine then selected the top finalists, featured their videos on the Web site for voting and went to Chapel Hill to interview each person before selecting the winner. To view Czar Odom's winning video, visit CheerwineCzar.com.
"All three finalists did really well, and helped drive more than 5,000 visitors to CheerwineCzar.com in just two months and thousands of votes," says Tom Barbitta, vice president of marketing for Cheerwine. "The finalists were naturally brilliant marketers, and we were impressed by how effectively they tapped social media and other mediums to campaign for the position."
As Czar, Odom will have a chance to earn $1,000 for going to Cheerwine-selected events in 2010, among other Czar duties, with the potential to earn more.
