Rec centers are on hiatus

DURHAM -- Three Durham Parks and Recreation Centers are closed for renovations.

They are the Weaver Street Recreation Center, the W.D. Hill Center and the Edison Johnson Recreation Center & Aquatics Center.

Renovations are funded by a 2005 bond issue and will include making the facilities ADA compliant. The centers are scheduled to reopen in June.

Meanwhile, the programs, activities and events held at the centers have been relocated to the following facilities:

n I.R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, 2000 S. Alston Ave.

n Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee St.

n Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St.

n Priess-Steele Place, a low-income public housing facility for seniors, 500 Pickwick Trail.

Vacation day camps offered

DURHAM -- The Durham Arts Council will offer an Intersession Arts Camp for youth ages 5-12 from Jan. 4-8. Each day will include visual and performing arts activities.

DAC's Winter Wonderlands Day Camp runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. Daily cost is $30, weekly cost is $130.

The Afternoon Adventures Camp, ages 6-12, runs from 2-5:30 p.m. daily. Daily cost is $20, weekly $90

Granville Habitat ReStore to move

OXFORD -- The Granville County Habitat for Humanity Offices and ReStore will more to a larger site in January to be able to have more room to sell building materials and serve the public better.

"What better way to start out the new year by having a new place to work out of," Habitat Executive Director Mark Prokop said.

ReStore administrator Phil Hanny said: "The new building, which is right next door to the current location, in the old Christex Building, has a lot more space. We'll have room to expand our operations for years to come."

The ReStore has closed and will reopen Jan. 9 after moving its merchandise. The public is invited to help GCHFH move everything in the office and ReStore. Interested individuals are asked to show up at 604 West Industry Drive, Oxford, through Jan. 15.
