Rock on: Ad agency McKinney is challenging Triangle companies and businesses to duel — rock ’n’ roll style — for the fourth year in a row.

The 2010 Triangle Battle of Bands will take place May 15 at the American Tobacco Campus amphitheatre, with all proceeds going to benefit Operation Literacy, a program by The Hill Center in Durham.

Bands will be allowed entry into the Battle on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for registration is the end of January.

The Hill Center helps elementary and middle school students in need of extra learning assistance to receive individualized after-school tutoring using the HillRAP (Reading Achievement Program).

Since the inaugural Battle in 2006, 19 bands have rocked the Triangle to raise over a quarter of a million dollars to benefit organizations focused on quality of life for less fortunate people in the Triangle.

Past winners include GlaxoSmithKline’s The Pharmers (2006), Burt’s Bees’ The Beemones (2007), and Capitol Broadcasting Company’s Transmit This! Band from Beyond (2008).

Shirts for goodness: A company in Durham is donating $1 to a dog rescue group for every retail sale.

Thundershirt, which makes shirts for dogs that help reduce their anxiety, was launched in May.

The idea for the shirt originally came about from founder Phil Blizzard’s dog, Dosi, a 10-year-old, 50-pound mutt, who had the shakes whenever there was a thunderstorm. Drugs didn’t work for Dosi, but Blizzard found that the shirt calmed her down.

The company has already donated hundreds of the shirts and thousands of dollars to rescue groups, shelters and the SPCA through the “Thundershirt Gives Back” program.

For information, go to www.thundershirt.com or e-mail service@thundershirt.com.
