In 1967, he returned to North Carolina and began work, first with the Physical Plant Division at UNC Chapel Hill, and later specifically, with the Electrics section of the Utilities Division. At that time, both the town and the University were served by this body. When the State Legislature required the University to dispense with this private telephone, electric, water & sewer utilities, the Chapel Hill Town Council appointed Everett as the Executive Director of the water and sewer system. Officially, this became the Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA). Everett was drafted into the Army in 1950 during the Korean Conflict and served as a medic in a MASH operation on the frontlines.

He found joy in nature, collecting leaves to paste everywhere and rescuing insects and small animals from harm's way. A vegetarian by age three, Nicholas would only eat "plant meat". He proudly said his role in the family's dog rescue program was to teach rescued pups about kids.

Nicholas loved superheroes, Sponge Bob, Carolina Tar Heels, beach trips, and being a big brother to Aven. He was inseparable from his mother. Nicholas experienced other places in the world on some great family vacations. Upon returning from Hawaii, Nicholas concluded he was part Hawaiian as he loved the islands so much. He attended Amity Methodist Church Nursery School and was enrolled in kindergarten at Central Elementary, Hillsborough, N.C.

A deep thinker for his young age, Nicholas treasured what's important in life - family, friends, and God's creations. Treasure what really matters. Life is too short.
