Reading group meets Jan. 22

CHAPEL HILL -- The Bruno Latour Reading Group will convene from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 22 in Hyde Hall at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities on the UNC campus.

The Carolina Lectures in Critical Thought Series, in partnership with the Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke, will offer monthly reading groups in anticipation of renowned French sociologist and anthropologist Bruno Latour's residency here and at Duke this spring.

Music on the Hill series at UNC

CHAPEL HILL — The Music on the Hill series will be presented from 8 to 10 p.m. Jan. 22 in Gerrard Hall on the UNC campus.

Ravel Chansons Madécasses and Walton Façade with Evan Feldman, Brooks de Wetter-Smith, Donald Oehler, Matthew McClure, Brent Wissick, Lynn Glassock, Jim Ketch and Terry Rhodes will perform.

Holmes event to be at library

CHAPEL HILL — “Return to Baker Street: A Sherlock Holmes Program” will be presented from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Rare Book Collection Reading Room in Wilson Library on the UNC campus.

Sherlock Holmes lives in Wilson Library, so everyone is invited to come to the Rare Book Collection there for a morning with the canonical consulting detective, his imitators, the actors of screen and stage who portrayed him and those who have studied his method and cult following. Materials from the Mary Shore Cameron and Charles Ragland collections of Sherlockiana will be examined.

Explore Morgan Creek Valley

CHAPEL HILL — Explore the Morgan Creek Valley from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the N.C. Botanical Garden Education Center.

The Morgan Creek Valley holds a wealth of natural and cultural heritage, from Ice Age rhododendron bluffs and rare plants to evidence of Native Americans and moonshiners. Everyone is invited to explore the length of the Morgan Creek Valley, from its headwaters to the Triassic Basin bottomlands of the Mason Farm Biological Reserve, all of which occurs within Orange County.

Pianist presents masterclass

CHAPEL HILL — Masterclass with Anton Kuerti on the piano will be presented from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 24 in Hill Hall Auditorium on the UNC campus.
