Holton, W.D. Hill celebrate Kwanzaa

DURHAM -- The Holton Career and Resource Center, in conjunction with W.D. Hill Recreation Center, will host its annual Kwanzaa celebration from noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 27 at 401 N. Driver St.

The free, public event will celebrate the family, community and African-American culture and is being held on the day of Kujichagulia which means self determination.

There will be a "Food!" Community Forum which will include an informal discussion about how residents can have better access to healthy food. Panelists include Melanie Wilkerson of Greenspace Initiative; Tim Gywn of the Beloved Community Center in Greensboro; and the Interfaith Food Shuttle. There will also be an Ancient Wisdom Workshop where participants will learn how to incorporate old traditions in their day to day lives to reduce waste. This workshop will be facilitated by members of Yikes!, an organization designed to find ways to reduce, reuse and recycle in Durham.

This event is free and open to the public. Dinner will be provided. Please see below for a list of activities:

- Noon-3 p.m. -- Three-on-three basketball.

- 1-2 p.m. -- "Food!" Community Forum.

- 2-3 p.m. -- "Ancient Wisdom" Sustainability Workshop.

- 3-4 p.m. -- Entertainment featuring Tekere Duafe African Dance, W.D. Hill Steppers, Holton Children's and Adult's West African Drumming Classes.

-- Unity ceremony with community leaders, dedication to ancestors.

- 5 p.m. -- Community dinner.

- Ongoing -- Interactive art activities, board games, vendor marketplace, kids' activities.
