Rec centers go on hiatus

DURHAM -- Three Durham Parks and Recreation Centers will close to undergo renovations this winter.

The Weaver Street Recreation Center is closed, the W.D. Hill Center will close Saturday and the Edison Johnson Recreation Center & Aquatics Center will close on Sunday.

Renovations will be funded by a November 2005 bond issue and will include making the facilities ADA compliant. The centers are scheduled to reopen in June.

The programs, activities and events held at the centers will be relocated to the following facilities:

n I.R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, 2000 S. Alston Ave.

n Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee St.

n Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St.

n Priess-Steele Place, a low-income public housing facility for seniors, 500 Pickwick Trail.

Youth hoops sign-up set

DURHAM -- Youth 3 to 18 may register to play basketball through the recreation ministry at White Rock Baptist Church on Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon, at the church, 3400 Fayetteville St.

Cost is $25 per player.

Vacation day camps offered

DURHAM -- The Durham Arts Council will offer an Intersession Arts Camp for youth ages 5-12 from Jan. 4-8. Each day will include visual and performing arts activities.

DAC's Winter Wonderlands Day Camp runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. Daily cost is $30, weekly cost is $130.

The Afternoon Adventures Camp, ages 6-12, runs from 2-5:30 p.m. daily. Daily cost is $20, weekly $90

APS seeking dog, cat toys

DURHAM -- The Animal Protection Society of Durham/Durham County Animal Shelter, 2117 E. Club Blvd., is holding its annual "Toys for Tail" dog and cat toy donation drive.

APS is asking the public to donate dog and cat toys for its shelter animals which benefit from being given different toys every day.

Re-usable toys are particularly valuable.

To donate, place toys in any of many donation bins around town, including the shelter itself, Petco and a number of local veterinary offices.
