Third Friday holds final 2009 event

DURHAM -- The final Third Friday Durham event of 2009 takes place today. Various downtown venues will be open between 6 and 9 p.m. The slogan for Third Friday Durham is "Culture Happens Here."

Here are a few venues that will participate in today's installment of Third Friday. For more details, visit www.thirdfridaydurham.com.

n The Scrap Exchange, 548 Foster St., will hold its annual holiday party between 6 and 9 p.m. Visitors can participate in an "Iron Craft" do-it-yourself craft competition.

n Golden Belt, 807 E. Main St., will have food and a cash bar, with art, jewelry, handmade textiles, and other items for sale.

n Pinhook, 117 W. Main St., will host a Revamp Clothing trunk show by Durham-based designer Jamie Powell from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

n DURTY, 305 E. Chapel Hill St., a new art studio, will celebrate its opening with an installation by Patrick Phelps-McKeown, "Yggdrasil The Tree of Life." America Reads will provide music and visuals. S'mores will be provided.

Soul Slam at Hayti to benefit food bank

DURHAM -- This month's Jambalaya Soul Slam combines spoken work competition with the holiday spirit of giving. Poet Dasan Ahanu, founder of the Jambalaya Soul Slam, will host today's event, which begins at 8 p.m. at Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville St.

Poet D. Noble will be the featured guest artist, and DJ D.A.ALLDAY will spin neo-soul music. Poets who want to participate in the slam must sign up by 8:30, and admission for them is free.

Today's slam is collecting non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Admission to the slam is $5 with a food donation, $7 without. For information, call 683-1709 or visit www.poetryslam.com.

Durham Art Walk taking applications

DURHAM -- The Durham Arts Council is taking applications for artists and sponsors for the next Durham Art Walk, April 17 and 18, 2010.

Arts Council taking exhibit proposals

DURHAM -- The Durham Arts Council is currently accepting exhibit proposals for solo or group shows for the 2010-2011 exhibition season in its Allenton and Semans Galleries.

This year the Durham Arts Council and the Durham Art Guild will be issuing separate Calls for Artists. Artists may apply to either or both of these calls. More information and downloadable applications are available at www.durhamarts.org.

Applications and support materials must be delivered to the Durham Arts Council by 6 p.m. Jan. 31, 2010.

Artists to submit RDU proposals

DURHAM -- Triangle Area Sister Cities has announced the selection of three artists who will be contracted to submit design proposals for an art installation in the International Area of Terminal 2 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The artists were selected by 19 jurors representing businesses, arts professions, educational institutions, the four regional Sister Cities Boards and RDU.

The three artists selected are Jeannette Brossard, a mosaic artist from Durham; Jane Filer, a painter from Chapel Hill; and Scott Nurkin, a muralist from Chapel Hill. They will submit their Design Proposals by Jan. 15. A final design will be selected in February. Plans are to have the art work installed in September 2010.

DAC announces winter camps

DURHAM -- The Durham Arts Council will offer an Intersession Arts Camp for youth ages 5-12 years from Jan. 4-8. Each day will be packed with visual and performing arts activities.

Winter Wonderlands Day Camp (9 a.m. to 2 p.m., drop-off starts at 8) will allow children to create their own dances, poems and artworks inspired by winter. Weekly cost is $130; daily cost is $30.

Afternoon Adventures (2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., ages 6-12), will take students to various destinations throughout Durham, including museums, theaters and more. Weekly cost is $90; daily cost is $20.
