Donations are sought

DURHAM -- Changing a Generation Outreach Ministries is seeking donations of warm items such as hats, socks and gloves to distribute to the elderly.

The effort is geared toward the winter season but particularly for Christmas since the older population often is overlooked during the holidays, said Executive Director Rodney Green.

Warm items may be dropped off at Collins Exxon, 100 S. Alston Ave. Monetary donations -- make checks payable to Changing a Generation Outreach Ministries -- may be sent to P.O. Box 1061, Durham, NC 27702.

For more information, call Green at (919) 519-6678.

Senior citizens in need of help

DURHAM -- The Council for Senior Citizens is requesting donations of personal care items that will be distributed during the holidays to older adults in need. Many seniors must make choices between food, medications and other necessities, and often they are unable to purchase these items necessary for personal care.

The items requested include: soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, lip balm, washcloths, razors, shaving cream and other personal care items.

In addition, the council maintains a food pantry, and all items donated are distributed to seniors in Durham County.

Donations can be dropped off at the Durham Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee Ave., through Wednesday.

For more information, call Juanita Allen Nelson, at (919) 688-8247, ext. 105, or e-mail jallen@councilseniorcitizens.org.

Urban Ministries sets fundraiser

DURHAM -- Urban Ministries of Durham is making it easy to donate funds to end homelessness while sending a holiday card created by North Carolina artist William Mangum.

During the holidays, Urban Ministries will sell Honor Cards for a minimum donation of $5. People who buy Honor Cards can send them to friends and family indicating that they have been remembered by a donation to Urban Ministries. All the proceeds go directly to Urban Ministries. As an added bonus, Urban Ministries can take holiday card lists and mail them on the purchaser's behalf.

Rescue Mission seeks donations

DURHAM -- The Durham Rescue Mission will host its annual Christmas Toy Give-Away on Wednesday and is seeking donations of toys and cash to help fund it.

The mission will serve a free traditional Christmas meal with all the trimmings and give away free clothing and free groceries to the needy.

The homeless and anyone in need of help during the holidays are invited to the community dinner at 1201 E. Main St.

To donate Christmas toys for the less-fortunate children of the community or to make a cash donation or to volunteer to take part in the dinner, call (919) 688-9641.

The mission needs volunteers to help setting up the event site, cooking, serving, setting up and manning game booths, giving away clothing and groceries and cleaning up.
