Donald Lee Banks Sr.

DURHAM -- Funeral services for Mr. Donald Lee Banks Sr. will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 3 p.m. from Pilgrim Baptist Church, 2420 Roxboro St., Durham.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Glennview Memorial Park.

Robert Lee Harding Jr.





DURHAM -- Robert Lee Harding Jr., 67, departed this life on December 9, 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Harding; six children; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers; four sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Peace Missionary Baptist Church, Durham, with visitation at noon.

Bobby Pointer

DURHAM -- A service of celebration for Mr. Bobby Pointer will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Joseph AME Church, 2521 Fayetteville St., Durham.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11 a.m. from Markham Memorial Gardens, 4826 Trenton Road, Chapel Hill.

Juanita English Hughes Willis

DURHAM -- Juanita English Hughes Willis, age 90, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, where she has been a resident since January, 2001.

Born in Campbell County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Nolia M. English and George Pierce English. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Gaither Hughes, who died in 1968. In 1971, she married Hugh Hiter Willis, M.D., who practiced medicine in Chatham, Virginia for more than 45 years. Dr. Willis predeceased her in February, 2008.

Mrs. Willis graduated from Radford College in Radford, Virginia. She taught first and second grades in the Danville Public Schools for many years. She was a member of the Garden Club of Danville, the Garden Club of Chatham, and the Great Books Club. She believed that everyone deserves the pleasure and education found in reading, and she greatly enjoyed teaching others to read.

She is survived by two children and two sons-in-law, Nita Gay Gladstone and Donald Roberts Gladstone, and Sarah Ford Bryson and William Holmes Bryson III, all of Durham; four grandchildren, Deborah Roberts Gladstone, Julia Hughes Gladstone Serrato, William Holmes Bryson IV and Matthew Marshall Bryson; four great-grandchildren; Tyler James Serrato, Caden Gladstone Serrato, Haley Alex Serrato, and Clara Marshall Bryson. She is also survived by two brothers, Wendell Blair English and Roland D. English; and one sister, Annette English McQuinn. One sister, Inez M. Wilson; and one brother, Harold Thomas English, predeceased her.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541, with graveside services immediately following at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Townes Funeral Home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Hilda Chappell Wynne





DURHAM -- Hilda Chappell Wynne answered the Master's call and entered her Heavenly home on December 9, 2009.

She was born in Durham to the late Johnnie and Vivian Addison Chappell on May 6, 1919. She graduated from Durham High School and Croft Business College. She retired from Golden Belt Manufacturing Company in 1983 after 36 years of service as a bookkeeper.

Hilda was a life-long member of Fuller Memorial Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Jack and Clinton Chappell; and her husband of 57 years, William C. Wynne Sr. (Buck).

Surviving are one daughter, Carol Wynne Umstead of Charlotte; and two sons of Durham, William C. Wynne Jr. (Phyllis) and John Andrew Wynne; four granddaughters, Lisa Wynne and Tammy Wynne Norville (Chris) of Durham and Angela Ayers DeHart (Greg) and Lauren Jean Umstead of Charlotte; four great-grandchildren, Bailey, Alexa, Jack and Justin DeHart of Charlotte; one sister, Catherine Chappell Williams of Union City, Tenn.; and two brothers of Durham, William Chappell and Edward Chappell.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 12 at 11 a.m. at Fuller Memorial Presbyterian Church with burial at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

ALAMANCE

Larry Bowles Carter Sr.

MEBANE -- Mr. Larry Bowles Carter Sr., 68, went to be with the Lord December 8, 2009 while at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell.

He had been ill for several years.

Mr. Carter was born in Durham, the son of Willie Carson Carter and Thelma Briggs Carter. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Duke University. Mr. Carter was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mac Carter; and a sister, Helon C. Brame; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Carter was well known in the community.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Rebecca H. Carter; children, Larry B. Carter Jr. of Stephens City, Va., Denise A. Ray of Creedmoor, William Stuart Carter and wife, Maria, of Manassas, Va., Bryant Matthew of Mebane, Daniel Allen, Chad Owen and Justin and Ashley Carter, of the home; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack Carter of Hillsborough, and W.C. Carter Jr. of Durham.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Casket bearers will be Marshall Brame Jr., Harold Clark, Tommy Dodson, Steve Cook, Randy Duke and Frank Simmons.

Morgan Minnis

HILLSBOROUGH -- Mr. Morgan Minnis, 47, died Wednesday at Durham Regional Hospital.

Mr. Minnis was born in Durham Co., the son of Mary Jo Crutchfield Minnis and the late James Morgan Minnis II.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Minnis is survived by a sister, Jo Linda Minnis of Hillsborough; and a brother, Frank Minnis and wife, Jamie, of Efland.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rich Greenway and the Rev. Luke Lingle officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service. The family is being assisted in Hillsborough by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.

Margaret Snipes Spruill





HILLSBOROUGH -- Margaret Snipes Spruill, age 56, of Hillsborough, born September 15, 1953 in Hurdle Mills, died in Durham Regional Hospital December 7, 2009.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Lee's Chapel Baptist Church. Burial in church cemetery.

Margaret held degrees in Accounting Technology and Business Management. She was a devout member of Lee's Chapel Baptist Church, a volunteer and passionate advocate of the 4-H in Orange County, and co-owner of Fuller-Spruill Family Care Home.

Survivors are two daughters, Crystal (Seaborn) Carter and Lakisha (Samuel) Dzilah; four grandchildren; mother, Sudie Snipes Wiley; and siblings, Burnice Jr., Ruben, Rachel, Diane, Kareem, Judy, Foster, Penny, Barry, Ellen, and Gary.

Visitation Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in Lee's Chapel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spruill Memorial Fund, 6111 NC Hwy. 86 N. Hillsborough, NC 27278.

Robert D. 'Bob' Tayloe

CHAPEL HILL -- Robert D. "Bob" Tayloe died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, December 9, 2009.

Bob was born in Salisbury on October 16, 1949. He grew up in Ahoskie and has been a Chapel Hill resident most of his adult life.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; and son, Daniel of the home; his mother, Donna Wilson Tayloe of Chapel Hill; daughters, Tracey Brown (Bobby) of Ahoskie and Stacey Hale (Tony) of Fayetteville; stepdaughter, Deirdre Hatley of Graham; and two grandchildren, Jameson and Elijah Brown. His father, Truitt Tayloe; brother, Mike; and stepson, Chris Hatley predeceased.

Bob was a beloved husband, father, and son. He was an avid fisherman and hunter but his greatest joy in life was coaching and watching Daniel on the baseball diamond.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service, and at other times at the home.
