Two salsa bands at UNC this weekend

CHAPEL HILL -- Two local salsa bands, Charanga Carolina and Orquesta GarDel, will share the stage Saturday at 9 p.m. in celebration of the birthday of their mutual lead singer, Nelson Delgado. The free concert will also be a social dance event and will take place in the Kenan Music Building on the UNC campus, next to the Ackland Art Museum on Columbia Street.

The UNC-based concert is a homecoming for Orquesta GarDel, which was originally founded in 2005 as the professional alter-ego to Charanga Carolina, a university ensemble in the Music Department at UNC. Orquesta GarDel's musical directors Eric Hirsh and Andy Kleindienst are both 2006 graduates of the UNC music program as well as founding members of Charanga Carolina, under the direction of David F. Garcia, a professor of ethnomusicology at the university. Garcia brought on local salsa veteran Delgado as a frontman for Charanga in 2004, and Delgado has continued to provide his vocal talents for both groups since their inception. His 58th birthday is Saturday, and the concert will be billed as a party in his honor.
