Condos on offer: The developers of a new condo property in downtown will be hosting an informational happy hour at West End Wine Bar on Thursday.

Two more in downtown: Coincidence or no, two brand new businesses in downtown both decided to open the week after Thanksgiving.

n Magpie, a new women's clothing boutique, opened Wednesday next door to West End Wine Bar in West Village and carries a mix of established labels like BCBG and emerging designers from Brazil and Asia.

The store is owned by Po-Ming Wong and husband, Tad Schwendler. Wong said she wanted to carry items that are classic and timeless, as well as versatile, so they can be worn straight from work to social settings.

Price points range from $70 to $250 for tops and $100-$300 for dresses, and the boutique also carries organic lotions, jewelry, accessories and scarves, as well as a Brazilian line of hand-carved and hand-soled shoes called Cavage.

Wong said they are planning to hold a grand opening event in January.

For information, call (919) 683-1981 or e-mail info@magpienc.com.

n The Republic, a new bar, has opened in the Five Points area, adding a night club type venue to the existing pub offering of Bull McCabe's and the specialty drinks of Whiskey.

The Republic, named after Plato's dialogue on justice and government, has space for a DJ, 65 barstools and loungey leather seats and a black and gray décor underlined by a dark Damask wall pattern behind the bar.

The new bar is at 353 W. Main St. in the former Triangle Empowerment Center space. The owners previously opened 202 Lounge in the Southpoint area. That bar closed last fall and construction on The Republic began in August.

As an aside: Buzz has noticed a revolutionary slant to new businesses in Durham recently, from Cuban Revolution Restaurant at American Tobacco Campus to the new bar, The Republic, to Fullsteam Brewery, spelled with a backwards “F,” and an ad agency on Rigsbee Avenue also named “The Republik,” yes, spelled with a ‘k.’

Coincidence? And of course, don’t forget another restaurant in downtown that opened last year — Revolution.

No word at press time on whether the two Republic(k)s will combine forces and become an oligarchy.
