CHAPEL HILL -- Three newly elected school board members took the oath of office Thursday night to serve as members of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.
Chief District Court Judge Joe Buckner swore in Michelle Brownstein, Joe Green and Greg McElveen at the beginning of the board's meeting at the Chapel Hill Town Hall.
Brownstein and Green are new to the board, but McElveen had been filling the unexpired term of Pam Hemminger, who resigned when she was elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners. McElveen replaced her one year ago, but successfully ran for election once that term expired.
Buckner encouraged family members to stand with the newly elected members as they took their oaths and invited people to take photographs as he administered the oaths.
The new board members joined the current members as they watched awards given to teachers and students for academic, music and athletic excellence.
After the teachers and students were introduced and received their certificates, the room, which had been filled to capacity, cleared and the board members got down to work.
Board member Jamezetta Bedford immediately nominated Mike Kelley, who had been the chairman of the board, to fill the position again for the coming year. The board members voted unanimously to make Kelly the chairman.
Mia Day Burroughs then nominated Bedford to be vice chairman, and again the members voted unanimously in approving Bedford for the position.
