CHAPEL HILL -- The principal of Frank Porter Graham Elementary School is resigning, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education has named an interim principal to serve until it finds a replacement.
Shelia Burnette, who has been the principal of Frank Porter Graham Elementary School for three and one half years, is on medical leave until Feb. 26, and she recently submitted a letter of resignation that will take effect at the conclusion of her leave.
The board approved Burnette's leave request and resignation at its Thursday night meeting at the Chapel Hill Town Hall.
The board also appointed Susan Pegg to be the interim principal of Frank Porter Graham Elementary School at the meeting.
Pegg retired in June as principal of Seawell Elementary School. She will begin her duties at Frank Porter Graham on Jan. 4.
Frank Porter Graham Assistant Principal Cindy Daniels will serve as the acting principal through the end of December.
The school district expects to quickly begin a search for a new principal with the goal of naming the new principal by June.
