Williams looking for win 600
bgorman@heraldsun.com; 419-6668
CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina coach Roy Williams will be aiming for his 600th career victory as the No. 11 Tar Heels host Nevada today (6:45 p.m., Fox Sports).
It's the final tune-up for the Tar Heels before they host No. 2 Michigan State on Tuesday, travel to No. 5 Kentucky on Saturday and then head to Dallas to face No. 3 Texas on Dec. 18.
Williams is in his 21st season as a college head coach and his winning percentage of 81.2 (599-139) is highest among active coaches.
And while Williams has gotten his young team off to a solid start (5-1), UNC still is struggling to be consistent for a full game. In the Tar Heels' most recent game, a victory over Gardner-Webb on Monday, they missed some easy shots around the basket in the beginning of the game and had some defensive lapses as the Bulldogs' Grayson Flittner hit nine 3-pointers.
Williams has also been unhappy with the Tar Heels' turnovers and free-throw shooting so far this season. UNC is averaging 18.8 turnovers and shooting just 68.2 from the free-throw line.
"Turnovers and missed free throws were the worst part [of Monday's game]," Williams said. "I mean, my gosh, we turned it over eleven times in the second half after only turning it over five times in the first half. ...So we have got to do a better job of that and we understand that and we are willing to work at it."
It will also be interesting to see if Williams continues tinkering with his lineup today. Against Gardner-Webb he had Dexter Strickland playing his more natural position at shooting guard -- with Larry Drew II running the point -- but the freshman said he didn't know if he'll get any more time at that spot this season.
"It felt good to run the floor," Strickland said.
Nevada (2-2) is coming off an 85-76 loss to VCU on Friday. The Wolf Pack has four players averaging double figures and are led by Luke Babbitt, who is averaging 20.3 points and 10.8 rebounds. The 6-9, 225 pound sophomore forwards also was the leading scorer for his team last year (22 points) when the Tar Heels beat the Wolf Pack 84-61 in Nevada.
