Holiday Shoebox Giveaway slated

DURHAM -- The Parks and Recreation Department, along with community, education and non-profit organizations, will lend its time and resources to give back to young people during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., volunteers will gather to "Stuff the DPR Bus," at the Durham Athletic Park, 428 Morris St., as a part of DPR's annual Holiday Shoebox Giveaway.

The Holiday Shoebox Giveaway was established to provide gifts to young people who participate in DPR's afterschool program during the holiday season. Shoeboxes include items such as toys, games, and necessities -- soap, gloves, hats, shampoo, etc. -- and are given to boys and girls between the ages of 5-18. This year's goal is to provide 278 shoeboxes as gifts.
