Mary A. Boghosian

DURHAM -- Mrs. Mary A. Boghosian, 81, died Thursday afternoon at Duke Medical Center.

Mrs. Boghosian was born in Concord, N.H., the daughter of the late Aslan Aslanian and Ankine Kesejian Aslanian.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Duke University.

Mrs. Boghosian was a member of Women of Willowhaven and the Women's Golf Association for 35 years. She was a great cook and the best wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother you could ask for, as well as very devoted to her family and any undertakings. She was loved by all who knew her and always gave encouragement to her offspring.

Mrs. Boghosian is survived by her husband, Charles Boghosian; son, Stephan C. Boghosian of Stem; granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Boghosian of Durham; and grandson, Stephan 'Garo' Boghosian II of Efland.

A reception will be held Sunday, December 6, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Umstead Pines Golf and Swim Club at Willowhaven. The family is being assisted in Durham by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.

Dorothy Jean Markley





DURHAM -- Dorothy Jean Markley, 78, passed away November 26, 2009 after a courageous five month battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry McCulloch Markley and her parents, Thomas and Eva Woody.

She is survived by three loving daughters, Debra Markley of Hillsborough, Linda Markley of Hickory, and Susan Champion and husband, Tony, of Hillsborough; two cherished grandchildren, Ashley Evans and TJ Champion; a sister Lib Clegg; and nephews and nieces, H.B., Tommy, Carol and Nancy.

She touched the lives of thousands of young people during her career as a teacher in Alamance and Durham Public Schools. Her legacy will live on through them for years to come.

Travel, bird watching and tending her flowers were a great source of pleasure for her, as well as a spirited game of dominoes and playing cards with friends.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Beth Rosenberg for her support and extraordinary care.

A celebration of life is planned for Wednesday, December 2 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she attended and was a member of the George Mathis Sunday School class. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately after the celebration of life service.

Samuel Delmas Vaughan Sr.





DURHAM -- Mr. Samuel Delmas Vaughan Sr., 96 years old, went home to live with his Lord on Thursday, November 26, 2009 following several months of declining health.

He was the last living son of George B. and Essie Champion Vaughan and had seven siblings who preceded him in death.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Franklin County and later moved to Granville County in the Wilton community. He was educated in the Granville County Schools. He moved his family to Durham in 1946 and lived in the Oak Grove community for the remainder of his life.

He retired from the City of Durham as a heavy equipment mechanic and continued to work maintaining equipment and vehicles for Vaughan Electric Company for another 30 years.

Mr. Vaughan has been a member of Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church for 52 years. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Group for many years.

He is survived by a loving wife of 76 years, Julia Meadows Gooch Vaughan; two sons, Sam Jr. and wife, Jane, and John Thomas (Jay) and wife, Peggy. He is also survived by three grandchildren and their families, Vickie Davis and husband, Jerry, and children, Jared and Jenna, Sam III (Chip) and wife, Gloria, and children, Sam IV (Chad) and Lauren, and Kayla Perry and husband, Rich, and children, Vaughan and Kaylee. Special thanks also to a loving niece, Julia Crews Wilkerson of Oxford.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fletcher's Chapel UM Church and the family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall following graveside rites. The Rev. Ron Snider and the Rev. Ray Gooch will officiate.

The family will be at the home of Sam Vaughan Sr. at 712 S. Mineral Springs Road. Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Fletcher's Chapel United Methodist Church, 2034 Fletcher's Chapel Road, Durham, NC 27703. Arrangements are being handled by Hudson Funeral Home.

Mary Frances Long Rich





BURLINGTON -- Mrs. Mary Frances Long Rich, 87, 546 Riverside Dr., Burlington, went to her Heavenly Home on Thursday November 26, 2009 at 5:35 a.m. at her residence.

She was a member of Lakeview Community Church. She was known as 'Pete' by her family. She was a co worker with her husband, for their ministry was a shared calling for them both. She did many things to help others. She taught vacation Bible school for many years and also volunteered at Alamance Health Care Center for six years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, William H. 'Bill' Rich, of the home; daughters, Jeanette Pendergraph and husband, Bob, of Pittsboro, Sybil Chinery and husband, Mike, of Burlington, Denise Smith and husband George, of Virginia, Emily Dudley and husband, Richard, of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Louise Moore, of Graham, Eula Black, of Graham, Jean Clapp and husband, Milton, of Graham, Ann Underwood and husband, Eddie, of Burlington; brothers, David Long and wife, Patsy, of Burlington, Jerry Long and wife, Jean, of Burlington; many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Lydia Lashley Long; sister, Dot Younger; brothers, Roy Long, Hester Long, and Earl Long

Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday November 29, 2009 at Historic Providence Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday November 28, 2009 at McClure Funeral Home in Graham, and other times at the residence of the family. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Minister will be the Rev. Darryl Peebles, the Rev. Larry Lamberth, and the Rev. Reid Dickens.

Patricia Ellen Newton Staley

CHAPEL HILL -- Mrs. Patricia Ellen Newton Staley, 55, of Chapel Hill, died Friday, November 27, 2009, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Staley was a native of Vance County but was raised in Chapel Hill. She was the daughter of the late Van Lewis Newton and LaRue Allen Hardee. Patricia was an administrative secretary for the University of North Carolina and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She also loved to make stained glass items as a hobby.

Surviving are her mother and step-father, LaRue A. and Jake Hardee of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Tommy Newton of Winston-Salem, and Steve Hardee of Chapel Hill; one sister, Cindy Merritt and husband, Wesley, of Hillsborough; and two nephews, Spencer and Connor Merritt. Also her beloved dogs Springer and Harley.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, November 29, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Carrboro United Methodist Church with visitation immediately after the service. Officiating will be the Reverend Claire McKeown and the Reverend Wesley Thomas. Family will receive friends at other times at the home of her mother.

LOUISBURG -- Melissa Jo Bullock-Godfrey, 26, Georgia Leigh Godfrey, 5, and John Wyatt 'Fatboy' Godfrey, 4, of Louisburg, died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 from injuries received in an auto accident.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, November 29, 2009 at Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton with the Rev. Al Thomas officiating.

Melissa Jo is survived by her husband, John W. Godfrey; her parents, Eddie R. Bullock of Creedmoor and Gina J. Harrington of Cary; grandparents, Lynn Crosley of Utah and Linda Johnson of Durham; sisters, Jennifer Harrington and Tabitha Harrington of Cary; brother, Westley Harrington, of Cary. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Gene Johnson.

Georgia and Wyatt are survived by their father, John W. Godfrey; grandparents, Tony and Cindy Godfrey of Creedmoor, Gina Harrington of Cary and Eddie Bullock of Creedmoor; aunts and uncles, Candace 'Nana' Godfrey, Holly Mulchi, Jennifer Harrington, Tabitha Harrington and Westley Harrington.
