Thanksgiving
Help to deliver meals today.
All families are clients of Durham County Department of Social Services who are in need of a little holiday cheer this year.

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 917 Onslow St., will serve free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners this year.
Thanksgiving dinner will be served on Thanksgiving Day -- Thursday -- and Christmas dinner on Christmas Day -- Dec. 25. Both meals run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Council for Senior Citizens is asking the Durham community to help donate food Durham seniors.
Donations can be dropped off at the Durham Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee Ave.
The council maintains a food pantry, and all items donated will be distributed to needy seniors in Durham County.
Christmas
Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A. is collecting donations to help fill 280 stockings to send to two military units for the holiday season.
The firm has adopted an Army Company, HHC, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, deployed in Iraq; and a Marine Special Operations Forces Company from Camp Lejeune, deployed in Afghanistan.
The firm is accepting tax-deductible monetary donations to help fill the stockings.
The deadline for donations is Nov. 30.
Everyone who makes a donation is invited to a stocking stuffing party at the firm on Dec. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Checks can be made out to PWKL Charitable Foundation, and mailed to Troops Donations, Pulley Watson, PO Drawer 3600, Durham, NC 27702.

The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle presents a holiday concert on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. that will help Toys for Tots.
The concert will be held in the Reynolds Theater at the Bryan Center, Duke University, Durham.
Tickets are $7 at the door and can be bought in advance from the Duke box office, tickets.duke.edu or (919) 684-4444.
RTOOT has partnered with Toys for Tots to help children in our community avoid a terrible holiday, and will accept donations at the holiday concert.
Patrons are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to collection bins at the concert to make these holidays memorable for those affected by these trying economic times.

Cribs for Kids of Durham is sponsoring a holiday crib drive. Sponsor a new crib for a Durham family in need.
Here's how:
n Donate a $50 tax deductible donation to Cribs for Kids of Durham.
n Families of newborns will receive a Pack-n-Play portacrib and receive safe-sleep training for SIDS reduction.
n You'll receive a holiday card and personal thank you note from a recipient family.
n Send sponsorship donations to: Child Parent Support Svcs. c/o Cribs for Kids, 411 W. Chapel Hill St. Durham, NC 27701.
Cribs for Kids of Durham is a nonprofit that provides free or low-cost cribs to parents of newborns to provide a safe sleep environments for infants and to reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. To receive a crib, Durham parents must receive a professional referral, attend safe sleep training and provide a $10 co-pay for new cribs. One hundred percent of donations are used to purchase cribs.

Dressbarn is partnering with Toys for Tots for the second year. The toy collection is taking place through Dec. 15.
Dressbarn is encouraging residents to donate new, unwrapped toys by giving customers who donate 15 percent off their purchase of a regular-priced item. All of the toys collected will be given to children in the community.
The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program objectives are to help less fortunate children throughout the country experience the joy of Christmas, to play an active role in the development of children, to unite all members of local communities, and to contribute to better communities in the future. By providing an example of success, the program aspires to steer children into becoming more responsible and productive citizens.

Durham Parks and Recreation along with community, education and nonprofit organizations will lend their time and resources to give back to many young people in Durham. On Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., volunteers will gather to "Stuff the DPR Bus," at the Durham Athletic Park (428 Morris St.) as a part of DPR's Annual Holiday Shoebox Giveaway.
The Holiday Shoebox Giveaway is an annual campaign that was established to provide gifts to young people who participate in DPR's after-school program during the holiday season. Shoeboxes include items such as toys, games, and necessities (soap, gloves, hats, shampoo, etc.) and are given to boys and girls between the ages of 5 to 18. This year the goal is to give away 278 shoeboxes.
Residents are welcome to participate in the Stuff the Bus/Annual Holiday Shoebox Giveaway. Participants unable to attend the Stuff the DPR Bus event can deliver their donations to the main office (400 Cleveland Street) through Dec. 7. The shoeboxes will be distributed to the youth the week of December 14.
