Tickets on sale for C. Michele

DURHAM -- Grammy-winning jazz and R&B vocalist Chrisette Michele perform March 3 at 8 p.m., at the Carolina Theatre. Tickets are $35, $29 and $30 for members and go on sale today at 11 a.m. at the Carolina Theatre box office, 309 W. Morgan St..

Born in Central Islip, N.Y., and raised in Patchogue, Michele quickly found her place in the music world by singing with her church gospel choir. She has been featured on several popular hip-hop albums for artists Jay-Z, Nas and Ghostface Killah.

Michele eventually launched her own album, "I Am," in 2007. Her debut album included four chart topping singles -- "If I Have My Way," "Best of Me," "Be Ok" and "Love Is You." She won the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.

'Flying on One Engine' at CDS

DURHAM -- Producer and director Joshua Z. Weinstein will be present for a screening of his documentary "Flying on One Engine" at 7 p.m. today at the Center for Documentary Studies, 1317 W. Pettigrew St. A reception will be held at 6, and a question-and-answer session will follow the screening.

"Flying on One Engine" is a story about Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet, who is wheelchair bound, without a larynx, and diagnosed with a life-threatening aortic aneurysm. The film chronicles his travels to India, where he performs free operations in marathon-like surgery sessions where up to 700 children receive treatment for their cleft lips and other deformities. Although Dicksheet survives on Social Security while living in his Brooklyn apartment, his life is drastically different in India, where the eight-time Nobel Prize nominee is treated like a living god.

Steven Wright at Carolina Theatre

DURHAM -- Comedian Steven Wright will perform at The Carolina Theatre of Durham at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 22, 2010. Tickets go on sale today at 11 a.m.

Wright is considered the king of offbeat one-liners, is known for his lethargic voice and deadpan delivery. Wright's humor has often been regarded as absurdist, nonsensical, deeply philosophical and always full of wit.

Tickets are $32, $29 and $27 for theater members. There is also a $69 Chocolate 'n' Beer Tasting ticket that includes a premium seat as well as an invitation to a VIP reception. Vitiello to present 'a poet's play'

DURHAM -- Durham writer and artist Chris Vitiello will present a poet's play titled "The dictionary within the dictionary." Concerned with language, humor, and ambiguity, the play involves live actors and musicians, as well as power tools and dictionaries.

Audience members will take something away from this performance, literally and figuratively. It will be performed today at The Space, at 715 Washington St. in downtown Durham, at 7:30 p.m. and again at 9:00.

Death row doc at ChathamArts

PITTSBORO -- ChathamArts' 100 Mile Film Series will present the documentary "Love Lived on Death Row" by local filmmaker Linda Booker Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Fearrington Village Barn.

Booker will be in attendance for post screening Q A. A theatrical reading of "For Strong Women," a poem by award-winning author Marge Piercy, will be presented prior to the film on behalf of women who have survived violence or loss.

The 84-minute documentary tells the story of the four adult Syriani siblings whose father was sentenced to death for the 1990 murder of their mother. Orphaned and estranged as children, they lived with hate, anger, and confusion as their father lived on North Carolina's Death Row.

Fearrington Village is on U.S. 15-501 in Chatham County midway between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill.

Ah Holly Fam'ly at Night Light

CHAPEL HILL -- The Northwest folk band Ah Holly Fam'ly head south for a performance at Night Light, 405 1/2 Rosemary St., Tuesday. Performance begins at 9:30.

The band is made up of husband-and-wife musicians Jeremy Faulkner and Becky Dawson. Other musicians -- Jared Arave, Morgan Hobart, Alexi Erenkov, Whitney Menzel, Jeff Diteman and Amelia Harnas -- play cello, lap steel, bells, violin, flute, ukulele, piano, and clarinet.
