DURHAM -- Trimeris Inc., a biopharmaceutical company in Durham, announced Wednesday that it has agreed to an extension to Dec. 28 of South Korea's Arigene Co. Ltd.'s tender offer for all of Trimeris' outstanding shares of common stock.
The company said that as of the close of business on Tuesday, a total of 18,462,006 shares, about 82.72 percent of the total, have been tendered and not withdrawn.
Trimeris and Arigene had agreed in October that Arigene would purchase all shares of Trimeris' common stock.
Syngenta food drive wraps up
DURHAM -- Syngenta Biotechnology Inc. concluded its month-long internal food drive to benefit local volunteer organizations on Wednesday.
The research facility based in Durham's Research Triangle Park collected more than 1,750 pounds of food, which was donated to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Communities in Schools of Durham.
Both organizations will use the donated food to help feed children from low-income families.
"The food raised by Syngenta will benefit our Weekend Backpack Program," said Elizabeth Levene, program specialist for Communities in Schools of Durham. "The program provides 50 students from very low-income families with a backpack filled with nutritious, non-perishable food each weekend to combat hunger and help them come to school Monday ready to learn."
State to get $1M for green jobs
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- North Carolina will receive more than $1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act green jobs competitive grants to promote green jobs.
The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina will receive $946,034 to collect, analyze and publicize information about green jobs. Telamon Corp., a Raleigh nonprofit, will receive a $100,000 grant to boost green industry training.
Telamon provides education, job training, child care, emergency services and housing opportunities to communities in 12 states. The funding will allow them to provide expanded education and training in green industry skills.
Hershey mulls bid for Cadbury
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Hershey, hoping to expand its overseas presence, has lined up a potential partner as the most recognizable name in American chocolate considers starting a bidding war for British candy maker Cadbury PLC.
Ferrero International SA, which makes Nutella chocolate spread and Tic Tacs, could give The Hershey Co. the financial firepower to top a $16.4 billion bid by Kraft Foods Inc.
Hershey and Ferrero said Wednesday they are considering a possible offer for Cadbury.
"Hershey confirms that it is reviewing its options and at this stage there can be no assurance that any proposal or offer from Hershey will be forthcoming," the company said in an announcement to the London Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Ferrero posted a similar statement.
