DURHAM -- The Rolling Hills/Southside Steering Committee is hosting a week-long series of design charrettes Monday through Friday at The Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville St., to gather community input for the revitalization efforts of this historic community.
The Rolling Hills/Southside committee was formed in 2007 and includes more than 40 community members and city representatives.
The goal is to have a community design plan ready by the end of January that will encompass 100 acres around Rolling Hills, including the Southside neighborhood. The $745,000 planning effort, paid for by the city, will yield a master plan for a redevelopment that could include 350 or more units of housing and retail space and cost approximately $80 million.
Resident participation in the charrettes is critical to ensure community needs are met and consensus is built before proceeding with the next phase of the master plan, which would establish a mixed-income residential community with some retail space at affordable and market rates.
Moving forward with renewal could also accelerate the redevelopment of Heritage Square, a shopping center directly across Lakewood Avenue. It could also expedite the redevelopment of Fayette Place, a 20-acre former public housing site.
Here's a day-by-day charette schedule:
- Monday, 6 p.m., kick-off charrette.
- Tuesday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., all day drop-in.
- Wednesday, 8 a.m.-noon, all morning drop-in followed by a 6 p.m. interim progress presentation.
- Thursday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., all day drop-in.
- Nov. 20, 8 a.m.-noon, all morning drop-in, followed by a 5 p.m. final progress presentation.
The charettes are free and open to the public.
