CARY -- Wet, rainy conditions prevailed on Wednesday during the quarterfinal round of the ACC men's soccer tournament at WakeMed Soccer Park. Instead of four back-to-back games, the first day of the tournament saw a pair of simultaneous matchups on separate fields.

The first set of games had Virginia play Maryland and Duke taking on Boston College.

Boston College's Edvin Worley headed home a cross 5:30 into the first overtime to lead the third-seeded Eagles to a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Duke.

"It was just one of those games, whoever scores the first goal is going to win," Duke coach John Kerr said. "It was difficult conditions, but I was happy with the team effort. We played well and hopefully we can bounce back and get ready for the NCAA Tournament."

Boston College held a 12-7 advantage in shots, while Duke had the 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

In the second set of matches, No. 2 North Carolina battled the elements and No. 20 N.C. State for 110 minutes of scoreless soccer but the Tar Heels were eliminated on penalty kicks, 4-1.

"It was obviously a tough, tough game for us," said UNC coach Elmar Bolowich. "I think it was also a tough game for N.C. State. I don't blame our players for anything. In the end, it was the team who capitalized on their opportunities the most and in PKs, N.C. State did that. So congratulations to them."

Both keepers, Christopher Widman for N.C. State and UNC senior Brooks Haggerty, were credited with shutouts and the match officially is recorded as a tie. Haggerty made a season-best five saves to claim his seventh shutout of the season, while Widman made four stops for the Wolfpack.

The Tar Heels posted a slight 14-13 edge in shot attempts, including a 4-2 advantage in overtime. The teams each had four corner kicks and five saves.

The Blue Devils, along with the Tar Heels, will await the NCAA Tournament bracket announcement on Monday.

Virginia, a 1-0 winner over Maryland, and Wake Forest, a 3-0 winner over Clemson, also moved on.

N.C. State will take on Boston College, while Virginia will face Wake Forest on Friday in the semifinals.
